This is a great idea but with a lot of caveats.

What the NPPL assumes is that everyone will have a unique chip tethered to an individual player. But the question is how long will they be tethered? For that point? Day? Event? Year? Eternity? Who is going to be managing all that data and trouble shooting when guns get cross referenced with players, guns go down, or someone doesn't use the chip at all? Is that even detectable? Couldn't I just as easily get away with cheating by using an illegal chip and having a friend outside the game dry firing the legal chip to simulate I'm playing legally?

Isn't this just wishful thinking? How enforceable and realistic will this be in lower divisions? I can see it working in the pros but holy cow there's going to be a mess in the lower divisions and on a mass scale.

If it's not worth doing right it's not worth doing at all.

edit- Thought of something else. Is there encryption for the wireless transmission? Someone gets a hold of those codes for the chips you're screwed regardless of encryption.

Seems like a solid direction if they do what they are designed to do. If there is a way to give refs one more thing to worry about, then they can keep the game running smoother

Are they then forced to buy a newer gun/newer board/borrow a gun to play, or make the choice not to play at all?

As an example, my daughter's E-Orracle has the original E-Blade E1 board in it, the 1.06, I believe. The board is semiauto only, and I don't think there's a spot to drop in add-on chips or connections. Would she be out of luck if she wanted to use her gun? I've also got a Timmy with an older Frenzy semi-auto board. Same story? I know those are sort of extreme examples, but it's something that bears thinking about.

That's what I get out of it. Just like an RF chip.

I think it is a cool step in the right direction...with some different software, etc. this could evolve into a lot...maybe even have head refs in a booth overlooking the field that can tell when one player fires before another and accurately pull the guy that got shot first in real time.

Who knows how it will evolve...will be fun to watch.

Is it easy to tell if a marker does not contain this chip? ie: One guys teammate on the sideline cycles his solenoid to give RF data while he shoots a gun without the chip in game?

whats the point of capped semi? might as well just use ramping instead of adding an additional piece of electronics that can fail/cause issues.

I could give a **** about prize money, I play for fun.

I'm pretty impressed they're going to be free (5-7 of them are anyway). Was expecting it to be ~$50ish.

I think the bigger issue is bouncy triggers and hidden ramp modes but these chips do nothing to address it.

Not sure how I feel about this. ROF is an issue but trigger bounce needs to be addressed as well.

This doesn't apply to me so in reality, I couldn't care less about this but the first thing to pop into my head was what happens if anything were to break on a board? If you do anything to modify the board, even as small as this, it is a reason for the manufacturer to be able to void the warranty

These chips are really cool in general and I like the idea of pulling a bunch of firing stats for teams. These are definitely not "free", however. HUGE jump in entry costs

Is this chip by Virtue? Werent they making a chip for guns so they can download all the stats for each player from each game through wi-fi? You can tell how much paint each player shot and how long they kept their guns rolling.

I like the idea. It makes the event a bit easier to monitor, and if they didn't cause problems, let them be used.
