The Oscars smell like a garden of turds this year.
That's not different from any other year, but it just seems even worse this year. How a movie like War Horse beat out Drive or Warrior is ridiculous. and the fact that Albert Brookes didn't get nominated is sad as well. The only thing I am excited about is Billy Crystal hosting again. Thoughts and opinions?

The Academy Awards are probably the most useless award ceremony ever. Absolutely nobody in the film industry cares about them.

I think The Descendants should win.

The Oscars are borig and for movie no one watches. I saw only one movie on that list and it was Moneyball. Decent, but boring. I suppose I should go watch the spike TV awards or the MTV awards in that case. I realize that the Oscars are for film excellence. Too many times great, influential films get completely overlooked.
I know what the Oscars are and how its all determined

I usually see most of the films nominated every year. There are always a few that don't belong and a few that should be nominated. For the most part they seem to get it right. The Artist, The Descendants, Moneyball are all great movies. Wish 50/50 got a nomination, though.

Drive was an amazing film. It was pretty groundbreaking with its use of diagetic/nondiagetic music. And took some real risks with its lack of dialog and camera close ups. It deserves some recognition, but it won't get it...
I haven't seen the descendants. But I think tree of life should win, cause like drive, it was ground breaking.

I heard really good things about Drive. Most of the negative buzz was from people expecting an intense blockbuster popcorn flick.

I really liked Drive but I didn't find it to be exceptional. It got a sound editing nomination which makes sense. I hope it wins that.

For the Drive fanboys: It has been nominated for Best Film in the BAFTAs.

I can see tree of life winning everything. It's all political and pretty much everybody in the Academy has at one time or another been involved with Terrence Malick.

Yea, a lof of people went in expecting a more stylish 'Transporter', and unfortunately that was because whoever made the trailer is an idiot.

Nobody cares?
Oh so nobody cares when a film going along with average viewing figures suddenly explodes at the box office because it had several Oscar nominations?
Last time I checked that meant money. Hollywood loves money and adoration does it not?

Sure, it's not that nobody cares, but rather it's the mindless drones that care. The rest of the normal thinking world sees the lack of any merit whatsoever in an awards show for art. The Oscars are mostly a self-pretentious narcissistic display of childishness.

Haha, please. We all know it's just a giant promotion scheme, but saying they mean nothing to most is ****ing retarded. More people watch the Oscars than the World Series.

More people don't watch them than do. Pretty sure that fits the definition of most.

In terms of population sure, of course. In terms of overall movie-goers or watchers... Not really, I don't see it. Not only is it watched by ~35 million people, but it's national (international) news for a week/ weeks as well.
I'm not saying its not a total waste of time and money, but it matters to a whole lot more than the "mindless drones."
