The only problem I have with this time period is a lot of the most iconic mechs are not going to be present. The developers have been coy about the Clans, so hopefully they will be included, at least in the future. I mean, what's a MechWarrior game without a Timber Wolf?

It should simplify customization since theres only one type of technology. Aside from the inner sphere lasers being more heat efficient there didn't seem to be a point to having two version of every weapon.

One thing that's been missing from mech games is elemental/power infantry combat. I think mw2 had elementals and the mekpaks add it to mw4 but what would be really interesting is being able to jump on and cling to mechs and tear armor off like the battletech books described.

For those of us who played prior to the 3050 tech coming back online, the baseline energy weapons make a lot of sense. Less range than the ER models, no pulse "machine gun" effect. Sure, they run cooler, but they're simple "shoot and done" weapons, too. No more Streak SRM's, no advanced targeting packs for any missles, no ECM, no XL engines, endosteel skeletons, FF armor or 2x strength heat sinks. The Level 1 game really is bare-bones, and it makes for easier programming not to have to include all the "effects" weapons and equipment.

As for iconic, to an old fart like me, the original 12 Mechs that came with the game initially (later called the "Unseens") are iconic. I was pretty mean with an Archer back in the day. The Timber Wolf really represents the next step in the game, bringing in the Clans and the advanced technology. Iconic for its era, to be sure. They're something that, 35 years into the story, will be coming back around, so it's not like they'll be gone forever. This is a real chance for a fresh crop of people to get interested in the game without having to learn literally 30 years of backstory and history that went into the game.

Wow, I thought it would look ****ty like all other FTP's are, but DAM. Blown away at how good it's looking so far. Massive props to the devs, can't wait for this to come out!

from someone that came into this in the early 2000's, the 30 years of back story is wayy too much lol, its all super cool but there is just some much history and literature to read to really get the gist of whats going on its a little over loading.

Got a whole bookcase full of the novels, and several totes worth of game material.

I could see a total geek-out upon release. Look at us prior to it. My wife likes to tell me just how much I wear my "inner nerd" on the outside, and this ain't helping.

Old school MW pen and paper here myself. Sounds like they are doing this right.....supposedly each RL day will be a RL day in game, and they started the clock already.

1 year in the clans will attack. Cool idea to bring in new tech/upgrades etc.

Good article from GDC:

Quote:
It plays like MechWarrior 4 and looks like Crysis 2. I'm kind of tempted to end the preview right there because, if that description doesn't make Piranha Games' upcoming resurrection of the franchise a "must play," nothing else I say is likely to matter
