Internship meeting at a pretty big local weekly publication seemed to go pretty well...feel like I did a good job talking with them...however I could also see how I would come of as a gigantic douche bag...so we'll see. Either way I will find out next Monday, in the mean time I am doing to take some photos directly related to the kinds of photos they sounded like they will be needing from me. Going to a hot dog place and gonna take photos of the cooks as well as the building and food. Excited for it haha
Its unpaid, 3 months, but hopefully I knock it outta the park and bring in something full time. I told them my paying stuff would get priority with me, but other than that I will be workin tough for em. wooo

the pdx version of the stranger?
spoiler - it won't become a paid gig.
but it will be good experience and if they don't care too much about conflicts being prioritized by you (how could they with no money being offered), it should be dope

You don't think so? It seems like they had two openings for interns, with a fair amount of stuff needing to be shot, if I knocked it outta the park the potential for it going anywhere is still low? Interesting. Either way it would be a good experience and good things should come from it. Sounds like they try to get interns cover shots and what not

here are specific factors working against you that you should consider. they are opinion, obviously - but informed by data / my experences:
there is an enormous pool of people who want to shoot for them - not all of them are talented, but the opportunity to work at a weekly publication shooting anything in this economy is something most career-driven photographers want to take advantage of. I imagine the desire to live the "photographer lifestyle" has a greater demand down there than it is up here - given the demographics. the majority of event photographs [in Seattle] are pulled from a user-donated flickr page. there are enough people who go to events thesedays with the equipment necessary to capture it - and who also wouldn't mind having their photograph in a print publication without being paid to do so [woo! tell your friends!]. I don't doubt that you'll use the opportunity to the fullest, and I don't doubt that something good will come from it - but be aware of the environmental constrictions at play within a freely distributed local paper.
[OT]
a trend at play that I think may continue to shape the print industry are all of us younger photographers "growing up" with a moderately detailed understanding of the industry and ability to cater to it. I like the idea of working part-time for a paper that gives me a steady stream of work, but in reality, I see a more viable and more "visually prosperous" future shooting for clients whose jobs/businesses require them to have a bomb media kit. by collaborating with these individuals, the content created has had plenty more time than what a photographer tied to the publication would be able to spend [both time and money]. the final quality dramatically increases the liklihood of a story being run on them - which is great for me, because then I can clip from multiple publications without having to work for them.

just got my epl1 in and checkit. I sorta honestly believe that mirrorless is the future once cost/technology is able to do so. So nice to have a compact camera with no shutterlag and things that come with p&s:

epl1 manual says 1/160 but people are getting 1/320 without problems. Without a shutter I'm not sure why it's not higher but it would be nice to shoot 1.8-2.8 in daytime with strobes without having to use filters.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d70.htm
1/500 sync speed, superior to Nikon D2H, D100, Canon 20D, 10D, 1Ds and 1D-Mk II and every other consumer DSLR. Read why sync speed is so important here. This is a critically important spec and a key reason I would buy the D70 over the more expensive D100, D2H, Canon 1Ds ($8,000), 10D, 20D or Digital Rebel. It actually works perfectly all the way up to 1/8,000 when used with any external flash, due to the D70's electronic shutter. Of course you'll lose a lot of light, so Nikon doesn't put this out in the open to same themselves from having to answer all the questions.
