gateway laptop problem (NV53)

I am trying to fix my brothers laptop. I would take it to BB but, thy would charge an arm and a leg so I need some help. When I turn on the computer I get a message that says "checking file system on C: the type of file system is NTSF. Volume label is Gateway. one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check , but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within 10 seconds" if I press a button it will go to the regular login screen, where I can type my password. After i type my password the computer shuts off. If I let it continue and do not press a button during the 10 seconds it says "CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... (insert number 0-100) complete" then at the end of the line it will say ("x" number of 446976 file records processed) then when it gets to 100% the computer shuts off.

I know this is long but, if anybody can help me I would greatly appreciate it very much. I was told by a some what "tech savy" friend that it could be the hard drive. If you need me to or if it would help I can post pics or a video of the computer and the things it is doing. Thanks guys, I hope you can help me.

That's odd. If you skip the disk check and log in, when it shuts off does the power just get cut or does it tell you that Windows is preparing to shut off? There's an unrelated issue where you log in and then you get immediately logged out, so Windows says "Logging in" and then it says "Logging off." Do you see any prompts like that?

No as soon as the password is entered it says logging in for about a second and then it instantly shuts off.

Sounds like a power/heat issue to me.

Thats what i would have thought, but if it consistently shuts off once it gets to 100% and not anytime before then it seems like it'd be unrelated to heat or sonething of that nature.

Edit: can you try to boot to a cd? Like a Bart PE disc or something.

I would point towards a HDD issue. I would try booting off a Live CD and see if you can get any data off the drive then re-install your OS.

I am not sure what a BE disc is, my knowledge of computers is very limited.

It came with Windows 7, I don't think I have any of the discs it came with.
When it first comes off I can get the the screen where it asks about boot options and the other things, i press one of the "f" buttons on the top to do this. I do not think it is a heat issue since it has really no time to heat up and it has never had any heat issues. Would it help if I made a video showing what it is doing?

try reinstalling windows. if it was a power issue i don't think it should be able to finish the hdd check.

if you got important files, try repairing the bootup process with the windows 7 disk.(find one yourself)

also, try safe mode, see if it logs in. it may be a virus on your system.

I for got to mention I took apart the computer to fix the screen. I put everything back the way it was before with the exception of fixing the loose screen.

If the problem is exactly as he describes it, that's not the cause at all.
