Hey bud for one: don't quit paintball... just a suggestion but yeah, you'll come back because snowboarding = 4-6 months/year. paintball = year around.
For snowboarding: rent gear and take a lesson the first time you go.
And then this:
For gear:
1.) Buy wool socks, and not the cheap ones. Plan to spend a couple bucks on these... believe me you'll be happy when you're feet aren't froze.
2.) base layer stretchy shirt + under armor cold gear + fleece (or even your favorite hoodie) + water proof shell > big fat jacket. You'll be happy you can take off layers to be more comfy as the season winds down and temps pick up... and this kind of stuff can be picked up at Ross, or TJ Maxx for cheap... (nice waterproof shell that will last a long time might run you up to $100+ depending on what you choose).
3.) Nice pants are worth the investment (not too thick, not too thin...). World Industries makes a good pair and well priced (+/-$50)
4.) boots... comfy & warm > cool looking. Just make sure they're not going to fall apart. If you're gonna order online, check out a pair at your local sporting goods store first to make sure the size is right and they are comfy to your feet.
5.) goggles... idk it's preference man. I look for polarized lenses and that's about it. preference here but big-named products are going to run you $100+
6.) for #'s 1-5, buying in May-June is the best time and you will be able to pick up the last two years' styles for huge discounts at your local skate/surf shops.
6.) Board & bindings... scour your local craigslist (all sales -> search: "snowboard") AND big one: check out in cities with big military installations nearby (colorado springs for instance). Soldiers are always buying nice stuff, not using it, marrying fat chicks, then selling it for way less than it is worth.
Hope that is what you were looking for.
P.S. the right size board will stand from the ground and be between the bottom of your chin and your nose. They are measured in CM so you can use a tape measure to guestimate sizes that will work for you.
