3 man or 5 man??

Me and my friend are putting together a team, but we don't know if we should make a 3 man or 5 man team. We just want to know if at tournaments and events which teams play more 3 man teams or 5 man teams??

Even if you will play 3 man most of the time, are you going to play with the same 3 in every match..maybe go with 5 just in case and utilize alternatives...etc

Start out 3 man so you can learn how everything goes, then move up to 5 man. Always have two extra people for 3 and 5 man.

Make a 5 man team with a 6 man roster. That way you can play both and put 2 teams into the 3 mans. and just rotate out with yall play a 5 man. makes for good practicing also can play 2v3 and 3v3.

Well im not sure about where you play but where i play 5 man is much more popular. So i can not really give you an answer there. i would talk to tournament players at your local field and see what they have to say. But my team was debating which to play, 3 or 5 man, not to long ago and we made the decision to go with 5 man and could not be happier. we just finished our first season in the gfoa d5 5man. but like towerdog said it is a good idea to have more than the amount of players that you need. (ex. 5 man have at least 6 players, 3 man have at least 4 players) b/c things will always come up and when it comes down to forking out the money for a tourny you will typically get a guy that cant afford it etc. And if i were you i would not rotate any more than one player. b/c when you rotate any more players things seem to get confusing, people are asking what there assignments are and where they are supposed to play so you end up creating a game plan as you are walking to the field to play your game. And when you rotate alot of players you cant really get a good feel for everyone and sync with each other etc. but that is just my opinion. But whatever you do decide to do make sure you just have a good time and learn from the experience.

Play 3-man, once you get the flow of a tournament start a 5-man.

3-man if your just starting then 5-man. eventually in my opinion 5-man is better.. your preference overall in the end though.

You'll want a backup and extra team members. Trying to get the same guys play all of the points every time is going to be a big strain. But if you have enough to rotate so you have fresh guys all the time you'll have a big advantage.

^^^ This.

Play both, infact play as much as you can. But practice 5 man. Its much easier to play 3man events when your used to playing 5 man. But its much harder to play a 5man event when you practice 3man.

But as the previous poster said, 6 players is a good number for drills.

Depends on how many reliable attenders you have. Even with reliable attenders, things happen that conflict with tourneys - funerals, weddings, vacations.

If you have 3, then stick with 3 (duh). If 5, stick with 3 for now and maybe try for 5, knowing that you'll likely need a replacement at the last minute (because crap happens).

If you have 5, why not play both?

You asked about which are more prevalent. I was going to ask the same of you. Around here, there's some alternation of 3 and 5, so can get some of both. A couple fields cater more to 5, others more to 3. You'll want to find out more in your area.

Some fields are delaying their tourney schedules for this year. I imagine it's mostly uncertainty about the economy. I know my favorite field cut several tourneys in 2011 because of "lack of interest." I'm hoping 2012 is better.

I agree with everyone saying 5-man is more popular.
But, personally, start with a 3-man. This way you can get a feel for tournament play, and work your way up.

Its always good to have alternates, lowers the cost per player for the event, which in this sport cash is king. I started out in 3mans for half a season and bumped to 5man the next. 3man helped me get an idea of playcalling as well as move making, both of which are important for 5man/7man. Communication is key. And in regards as to who plays what format, 3mans and 5mans in illinois usually always fill to capacity

I agree with whoever said play both. We have 7 men on the roster to play 5 man but able to field 2/3man teams if we want. The more you can play the more experience you'll get. Have fun
