Is my tank too big?

How do i know if my hpa tank is too big?
it feels wierd but i have never used hpa before.

Its a 68/45

Would a smaller reg help?

as it is now, with the reg on its as long as a 98 custom minus the barrel.

also how are you suposed to hold a marker with a hpa tank?

Shoulder the gun, Litterally, tank on the shoulder. Possibly up and under the armpit. What are you shooting, marker wise?

Mkah, That makes it a little easier to work with on how to tell you to hold the gun. It's dependent on your body size, your arm length, and the gun length. Most of the time, people shoulder the gun, IE get the tank up into crevice of the armpit between the chest and shoulderblade, and bring their frame holding arm inward as not to "Chicken Wing" (Chicken winging ususually reffers to the fact you've got you're elbow stuck out, you look like a chicken, and you get shot in the arm much, much easier.)

That being said, you'll have to play around with it on each gun. On the Phenom, it's not so much an issue, as they are rather small markers for the size and type of gun they are, and interesting, too, I might add. For the axe - Because it has no options for a dropforward (To my knowledge, I may be wrong and I'll look into it) You'll just kind of have to suffer until you get comfortable with using it. Your other options for markers are Dropfowards, which move the tank foward and down slightly, giving it a different center of gravity and a little bit more manuverability. In the old days, Drop forwards were the way to roll due to the way many hyper pipe fields were set up, as the inflatable bunkers weren't really a big option, and they were harder to move around, so it required you being able to have a more compact setup. nowadays, thanks to most, if not all tournaments being run on airball fields, the drop has gone the way of the dinosaur.

I digress. Once you get the proper feel to shoulder the tank, you'll start learning a few other things, eratta - You'll never drop your gun (point it down) once you've got a feel for where it's supposed to be.

You may ALSO grow into the tank. I don't know how old you are, or how much longer you've got or how many growth plates yet. I can't tell you if you're going to get bigger which will make carrying the markers easier in fighting stance. If the tank DOES just end up being way too big, you can always switch to a Ninja 50 Peanut or a Crossfire 70 Peanut, depending on WHAT your air requirements are.

Im 19. Im not growing much. actually im shrinking as im trying to loose weight.
I dont want to play back anymore so im tring to get faster.

do the regulator size make a diffrance. my tank is a stock empire air. the reg looks to be about 3 paintballs long. do they make smaller regs? it just seems like half the length of my gear is tank.

They do make smaller regs but the difference won't be huge. Have you tried dropping down to a 45/48/50 CI tank? (Crossfire's Stealth reg is pretty short as is Ninja's. GA makes the Myth but those have a very hit or miss reputation for quality).

the phenom can take a dropforwards if you want to move your bottle forward and make it a smaller shoulder. The Axe can also take a drop, but it's just for minis and axes because the air goes up into the grip. I don't know who all makes them, but there seem to be a few around.
This upgrade will make your bottle seem more like a 12oz co2 in length...

with your arm out flat, and the gun in your hand, the end of your tank should be near your elbow. you should be able to press it into your shoulder and your arm be in a comfortable position. if your switching from co2 tanks it might just take a little getting used too like headshotted mentioned since hpa tanks are longer, but a 68ci tank is the "normal" size.

should be able to press it into your shoulder like this:

for reference im just a little over 6' tall, and using a ninja 68/4500 tank. if your a shorter person and it stills feels awkward then a rail would let you move your asa about an inch forward. small changes can make a big difference in comfort.

A 68ci tank is usually considered the "normal" size, but I've found that Tippmanns, because they're longer than most guns, tend to shoulder better for me using 70/72ci "peanut" tanks.
A shorter reg, like a Myth might help a little bit, but I think the best thing for you to do is just try playing with it a few times and see if you get used to it.

68/4500 is definitely NOT too big. And the fact that you are using a Tippmann only rreinforces that you SHOULD be using that tank if not a bit larger. Tippmann markers are not known to be very efficient so you will eat up air fast

You should be okay with that tank. I'd spend the money on more field time before you go out and spend money on big ticket items (tanks, guns, etc). Ask other players at your local field to try out their setups so you can get a feel for what fits you best. The elbow comparison mentioned a few posts above me is a pretty good rule of thumb but don't let that discourage you if you feel comfortable with what you have.

Reread the post it says it's as long as his Tippman w/o the barrel.

Ok now back to the question. if you extend your arm palm up the tank should come to the bend in your elbow. If it doesn't do that there are several solutions to this.

1) If its too long get a different ASA or a drop forward. 68/45 would be too long for my Ion but fits just fine on my Timmy.

2) Too long get a smaller tank.

The tank isn't necessarily too big you just need the right extras to make it fit you.

68/4500 is pretty standard unless you're a tiny 12 year old or really like a short short short setup. I've used 45ci, some stubbies, and always go back to the 68.

Me^ Little higher up than is normally ideal what whatever works.

Shooting an X7, get a remote hose and stick that tank on your back. Lightens up the marker, lets you put on a stock.

As for the Axe, practise the various holding positions pictured above until you find your comfort zone.

68/45 for the win. I don't know how people use peanut/stubby tanks or even a 45/45.
