Enlistment Help
Im going into the military to become a helicopter pilot for the US Army when i graduate high school. I know they have a warrant officer program right after high school that you can go into after BCT, but i was thinking it would be more worth while to go to college and ROTC and become a commissioned officer and go to flight school from there because of 1: I still get to do what i want, which is serve my country and fly; 2, i get a college degree; and 3, i get payed more for doing the same thing. Anyone that is a pilot for the Army, can you guys help me out and let me know if you think it would be better to go to college first and ROTC or enlist out of high school?

I'm pretty sure the only way to guarantee a flying gig is to be a warrant. and if you were to go to college and become an O you won't get to spend your entire career in the cockpit.

im going through the process of applying for WO school for aviation right now, and what NE said is pretty much true. Officers have to do certain things during their career, its not all going to be in aviation. you will be branched out and have to do other jobs in the army. But if you just want to get through flight school and do your time as a pilot and move on ROTC is the way to go. If you want to fly for the rest of your time, WO is the way....at least from what i was told

I would be surprised if the high school to WO program still exists, might want to check with a recruiter. When I was working they never had it open and were constantly talking about it being on the chopping block.

If you want to fly go WO. Officers don't get to pick their branch so you could end up a supply officer or some other ****ty job.... and even if you did get to fly the commissioned officers don't fly as much as the WOs.

Some officers do get to pick which field they go into. I forget the names of the different officer groups though.

We get a wishlist, and what we get is based off our GPA and APFT scores.

You'll be riding a desk at some point and you'll only fly to stay current.

Yes, the aviation slots are very competitive... and even if you get one you won't get nearly as many hours as a WO. If you want to fly go WO. Or you could get a commission in the Navy or Marines and fly for them since they don't have WO pilots.

Dunno what you're looking to get out of the military then, seeing how the army flies most of them.

You could always fly for the Coast Guard, if the Army doesn't have what you want then you probably want the CG then.

Same thing is a blackhawk, but with different electronics. I'd put the boys in SOAR up against any other branch.
