I was shooting at 2.0 when I had the 50 out, which is a pretty clutch fstop for portraits. I love this set/don't really think they're that soft besides maybe two or three.

I don't really think it's the chosen aperture per say as much as the lens. Anything not L glass (on the canon side anyway) has difficulty pinning focus properly at super shallow DOF. My 30 1.4 on my 7D is pretty soft at anything larger than f/2. At f/1.4 forget about it unless you're close up. I think some post on those could fix 'em up pretty well

i can shoot at 1.4 with my 50 and be razor sharp, however i would never use anything under 4 per say if i was shooting 2 people unless they are standing exactly side by side or something... i wasnt saying there is a specific aperture to shoot at, just that some seemed oof

I agree I had a 17-40L but that was f/4, I needed something with a decent dof so I sold that and picked up the nifty fifty. Definitely gonna try and get some more L glass soon, as far as them both being in focus I wanted to put emphasis on one at a time not shoot f4/5 and lose that awesome dof

I've got a pristine 24-70L I'm looking to unload if you've got $1100 to spare. It's a great lens if you prefer a zoom. Only reason I'm getting rid of mine is because I switched to all fast primes.

Sweet stuff. Definitely feeling it.

Its typically my MO to shoot insects in their natural environment. But it may be worth picking up a beater tank to mess with.

I rented a 24-70 to shoot a wedding a few years back, wasn't too impressed. Then again, it was a rental.

I've never used a 24-70 and never had the felt need to
