U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade Township, is speaking out against a defense bill being debated in the U.S. Senate this week, calling it “one of the most anti-liberty pieces of legislation of our lifetime.”
According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Defense Authorization Act will allow the U.S. military to declare national territory part of the "battlefield" in the “War on Terror.”
Authored by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Michigan, and Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, the act would “permit the federal government to indefinitely detain American citizens on American soil, without charge or trial, at the discretion of the President,”
This type of stuff is sickening. But its a great way to work around Posse Comitatus Act, no. By great, I mean ****ing horrible. Why is it that whenever I see crap like this, I automagically think of that scene in Star Wars where the Republic is reorganized into the First Galactic Empire? At least I'm not the only one.
What is your take on this? Am I being partisan? I don't know if you can actually call it partisan, when it is philosophy I am following (paleo-conservitive, flirting with classical liberalism) instead of a political party. For all the good things it should do, should we ignore the bad things it could do? I believe that question, along with constitutionality (don't give me that general welfare/commerce clause bullcrap), should be asked multiple times prior to coming up for a vote. And it should be asked again by the Chief Executor.
I don't agree with the Star Wars reference. The consolidation of the republic into the Galactic Empire provided stability and unity. The senate was completely corrupted and ineffectual. It couldn't even organize a response to the manufactured threat of the separatist movement. The Galaxy desperately needed unity and will. The empire provided that.
Section 1031 defines who is covered by this, which includes anyone who supports those engaged in hostilies against the US or its coallition allies.
Section 1032 (a) defines the requirements needed for the military to detain people.
Section 1032 (b) then says "the requirements to detain a person under military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United states."
So basicly in order to detain ANYONE all you have to do is show they supported a group that was engaged in hostilities against the US or its Coallition Allies. So if you supported the IRA, any group that hates Israel, any group that teh US considers an active terrorist group you are fair game; Even if you are a US Citizen. (Now before you think you are safe, look up who the Government thinks is a "terrorist group". All you enviromental groups, far right wing Christian fundamentalists, anti-globalization people, Animal rights groups, and all your supporters are now fair game)

good luck doing anything about this. Our government has forgone all the normal **** and now just making plays. We are just cattle pretty much. Can't wait for the **** to hit the fan. This county is gonna self-destruct and it's everyone's fault.
This could mean the death of the Republican Party. Much like how the Alien and Sedition Acts were the death (coupled with a few other things) of the Federalist Party.

Came in here to make sure this was a thread. From what I read from the ACLU website (lol...)
Quote:
There you have it — indefinite military detention of American citizens without charge or trial. And the Senate is likely to vote on it Monday or Tuesday.

“1031, the statement of authority to detain, does apply to American citizens and it designates the world as the battlefield, including the homeland.”
lolwut?
Will be calling my senators in a few minutes.
to Sen. Mark Udall for trying to restrict this bull**** as much as possible.

All we need to do is slap Dick Cheney into a black plastic suit with a breathing apparatus (which he'll probably need soon anyway), and then give him carte blanche to be McCain's uber enforcer, and the analogy will be complete.

The only thing that surprises me about this is how surprised all of you seem.
Not surprised just dissapointed. I typically have a phone call with a buddy of mine in Florida (he has done lots of security, private military work, cop work, etc.) and we've been expecting this for a while.
We each believe the second that anyone close gets detained that America is no longer the home we love.
I'm being overly emotional but this is one thing I find morally repugnant.
