Abbreviated cocker barrel threads?

The abbreviated cocker threads that are on empires and Simons barrels are basically just the same threads, but they don't go as far back on the base of the barrel, right?

In theory, couldn't you take any cocker barrel, and sand down the threads so that the threads don't thread in as far and achieve the same effect, wouldn't it be the same thing?

What they did us made it the same gauge and thickness threads they just made less threads. So you only have to turn your barrel 3-5 times around instead of like 16

I know that's what they did, that they just didn't put as many threads on it. I'm asking if you can take a normal cocker barrel, ie a PE shaft 3, and grind down some of the threads so that there aren't as many threads and you have he same effect, where you don't have to turn the barrel so many times to get it screwed in/out.

Yes but I would do it on a lathe not just free hand.

Sure, can you build a small nuclear reactor by yourself?
Yes.
Should you?
No.

Why not? It would be a very straight forward operation with the right tools and a little knowledge. I would say in my machine it would take most likely about 10 min or less.

That idiot is on my "ignore" list for a reason!

It's not a challenging thing to do with or without a lathe; as mentioned earlier it will looks prettier if you use a lathe, but a file, some elbow grease and a little time will get it done just fine.

Early on there were variances in tolerances between different manufacturers when it came to markers and barrels sold as "autococker threaded" - some barrels just wouldn't thread fully into certain markers even though they were supposedly the same thread pattern. The common solution often was to remove a few rows of threading; it made some combos useable and prevented binding when it you had a tight fit.

I always had issues with early Smartparts barrels and all stainless TASO barrels not threading into highend markers by companies with better-than-average and tight tolerances (AKA, PTP, AM) and removing a few threads was always the solution.

If you're worried, practice on a cheap stock barrel.

im with Frizzle Fry on this one. its really not hard to take off some threads, but ideally you want a lathe.

That's what I figured and seems to be the general consensus on the thread. I may go ahead with it if I can find somebody I know with a lathe, or maybe go to a local machine shop.

Most machine shops are going to charge at least $30-50 for it. If you can find one with a manual lathe, you could talk them down since it's easy to chuck up and cut the threads off. I could have it done in a couple minutes.

If you're handy with a dremel, it won't be too bad since the area you'll be cutting does nothing for locating the barrel. After using a sanding drum or grinding wheel, if you have a cratex wheel, use it. It'll polish the cut area up to a nice shine.

Use a dremel or sand paper if its your own barrel. While the other guys on here can produce clean looking results if you are just trying to go for function, you wont see it on a gun so just do it by hand. AC threads arent a lot of meat to really take off anyway so it shouldnt be too hard.

You should do it as a service I knew I couldn't have been the only one who was thinking about this after Simon started it on the empire barrels, or even before that.

There are some guns with less threads in the breach (eg Clone), so a combination of abbreviated barrel threads and less threads in the gun could lead to compatibility issues.

Yep that's exactly what you can do, just be careful not to remove too many threads and you may want to add an o-ring to help lock the barrel into place when it is tightened.

There are specs on my website for how much you can take off, and if you follow that relatively closely you should be good

With the Axe and some other guns I designed we purposely counter bore the breech as well so it's very quick to thread barrels with the new specs into them. As Tyrone points out you wouldn't want to make it so that it was only a turn or two into a standard style body as then if you went to put it into a counter bored gun like the Axe it may not tighten up.

Too bad people are so reluctant to simply switch to a better standard like spyder threads.
