NASCAR - Mt. Dew - Dale Jr. Commercial

I do not know if this qualifies as news but three of the biggest names in Us sports shot a Paintball commercial and it broadcast live during Sundays Talladaga Race. Yet I do not see anywhere where Paintball Players and the Industry have posted, raved or encouraged their players to watch it on YouTube thus showing strong support for the efforts of Mt. Dew or Dale Jr. Players and Industry if we want outside support we have to show support from the inside.

That's because they did a poor job of promoting the sport. I see a bunch of dudes running around in the woods without masks on - which is exactly the stereotype that paintball needs to kill if we want to be looked at with any legitimacy. Field managers around the country collectively face-palmed when that commercial aired.

EDIT: I also see the "losers" being mercilessly overshot. Yeah, real positive portrayal of our sport.

Saw it while watching 'Dega in fast forward on the DVR, it's the only way I can still watch. Not enough time for 4 hours of racing every weekend these days.

You have to understand mask on or off it was promotion of the game. I think it was an awesome promotion for the Industry that we received on National TV for free! Embrace it be positive about it and hopefully there will be more to come.

I saw masks on everyone but Jr. Masks came off for speaking parts, it is a commercial after all. Nothing wrong with that publicity IMO.

On a side note, nascar sucks.

NASCAR does blow. I like formula racing. . Not just multiple left turns and occasional spin outs I understand they are 800+hp fire breathing demons of engines in nascar and hard as hell to drive but still, not too exciting to watch. Just like how I can't stand to watch paintball but I love to play the sport

Players, I do not think you guys realize How Big of a deal this is. This one commercial probably cost more to produce and Air then the entire advertising budget of the entire Paintball Industry on a national Level. By looking at some of the attitudes I can see why we have been stuck in a rut since 90's. I guess before I hope for anything on a true National Level I better hope for a change in attitudes towards outside sports, sponsors and athletes

Or more of the sports Been in a rut because not everyone wants to go out and play against the players who play every weekend and are good and just get shot up about 80 times in which this commercial portrays. You need more considerate players and people who want to take the time to follow the sport for it to succeed more.

Wasn't there also an episode of the Big Bang Theory that had the cast playing paintball as well? They took their masks off mid-game in that episode as well, then proceeded to shoot their teammates pointblank.

Is this really the kind of exposure paintball needs? Massively overshooting players at point blank range? As much as I want exposure, I question the age old adage of "Any exposure is good exposure".

Put it this way, you could run a National Paintball ad 50 times with all the best teams and Woodsball notables, with every Manufacturer mentioned and it still would not appeal to the public as much as the Dale/Mt. Dew commercial.

Sure it would, it would just need to be shown in the same prime-time spot. It could be done in a way that shows the game being played in a realistic and safe manner too.

I see the value in putting paintball in a NASCAR commercial, but I also see how much harm was done by that short clip.

How much harm?

I'll grant that they did it wrong. Yes, they lifted their masks, just like damn near every TV show and/or commercial having a paintball connection does. We as players notice because we know. The public watches that and says "huh, paintball, neat". IF they go out to a field, they're going to get the standard safety briefing where the ref scares the hell out of them about mask safety. At least, that's how I always do it.

I've noticed no increase in renters lifting masks at fields since paintball started showing up on TV, no matter how badly they screw up the safety aspect. Maybe that's just me.

solid point here sir.

i just find it difficult to believe that that short clip will convince more than maybe a couple people to try out the sport though.

Probably won't convince more than a couple people to switch from beer to Diet Dew.

The real issue with mask use portrayal in mainstream media isn't commercial fields, it's people buying equipment at retail and using it at a non-commercial facility. That's where the vast majority of paintball eye injuries happen. The commercial does portray that if you don't think you're in the immediate line of fire, it's ok to take your mask off, and that's when injuries happen.

That said, I really don't see any other way for commercials or TV shows to do it, and I also don't really think the portrayals in commercials / TV shows have any real practical affect on mask usage. The vast majority of eye injury cases I've seen (aka read about in lawsuits) are people who reflexively take masks off on the field when they're eliminated, and people who are not practicing good mask/barrel blocking device usage (i.e. make sure everyone has their BBD in place before any masks come off.)

Personally, I thought the commercial was creative, exciting, and paired paintball with two other things well - NASCAR and Mt. Dew.

Probably the best commercial from a pball standpoint I've seen in a long while. They wear masks for all but the speaking parts. That alone is huge. Junior is a huge celebrity face to have in a commercial featuring paintball.

By the way, Dale Jr has a paintball field at his home. A big one - 80 acres. Some of the other NASCAR drivers and team members apparently are frequent guest players out there.

Industry Leaders where are you guys on this. Seems quiet around the big boy world. Heck if I was Richmond or Gino I would be sending a thank you package to the parties involved.
