Weird computer issue

Okay so i got this HP laptop from my cousin and its having a weird issue..

When i close the lid and let it sit, most of the time when i go back on it, it has network issues, it will not connect to the internet no matter what.. Sometimes it works fine.

Now to make this work again, i have to restart, go into safe mode, then restart again and start windows normally.

Ive never seen this issue before on a computer.. Can anyone help? Im on Vista btw

Is your laptop going to sleep when you close it? It could be that something is going awry with restoring to a full desktop.

Try going editing your power options to never sleep while plugged in and try closing it and reopening it after a few minutes...I don't know where it's at in Vista but you can find it here in Windows 7...Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

Adjust the circled area, the arrow is the next troubleshooting step:

If that doesn't work try to manually adjust the advanced power settings by clicking by the arrow in the above picture and navigating to the following drop downs:

I ****in' love descriptions like this. It's why I get up in the morning.

Long story short, one of Vista's legendary traits is the "local only" network status. Either upgrade the system to 7 or trash it. Vista led a short, painful, infuriating life, and this is part of the reason why.

when i was using my sister's latitude (which runs 7), it did something very similar. i never figured out whether or not it was caused by the fact that you need a username/password (or at least a saved set of credentials) to log on to either network.

I've seen problems like this caused by viruses or even the incorrect driver being used. Even after the virus is removed the damage done to the registry is still there which can cause drivers not to load correctly or cause a very long delay in the driver being loaded.

Try doing a system repair. If that doesn't work reinstall the driver. The last course of action is to just reinstall windows.

Definitely make sure you're using the latest and greatest driver. You can either get it from the OEM or sometimes they'll be listed as optional updates when you do a windows update.
