Uh ok, seems like a good laptop.

Only thing I would change is to put in an SSD.

Meh, SSD's only help bootup. I used to run them, I need the space more than I need to boot in 15 seconds as opposed to 65 seconds. This isn't a gaming machine that constantly loads to buffers, SSD help perfermance for "normal" usage nearly nill while increasing cost a LOT for 500 GB drive.

I wonder if the actors have gotten any increased residual income with the upswing in popularity after the SB commercial using them?

500GB SSDs are only like $200, jeez.

Now when bought from the OEM. To upgrade to a 250 GB SSD was over $200 upgrade fee. I didn't price upgrading to a 500.

That's not from the OEM. 3 year onsite warranty VOID if non-oem equipment installed. Please try this thing called READING.

If you can't install a new drive in a laptop without voiding it's warranty, then you shouldn't have bought said laptop...

EDIT:

Software, including without limitation, the operating system and software added to the Dell-branded hardware products through our factory-integration system, third-party software or the reloading of software

You already voided that **** by installing ubuntu

In practice, that only applies if a.) you try to get them to replace your disk under warranty, or b.) the drive shorted out the motherboard or something.

Worst case, pull your drive out and put the OEM one in before the tech shows up.

The warranty is only on hardware. Their business warranty is specifically so that you can change software without voiding warranty. This is the reason I buy business laptops (I don't actually have a business, the laptops are better IMO and the warranty is more linux-friendly). You can do whatever you like with software, doesn't do anything to the warranty (well it does to the 30 day initial setup warranty, but not the long term on-site hardware warranty). I like having a warranty for 3 years where they'll come to my house to replace anything that fails, and don't like having to jump through hoops to maintain it. Therefore, must buy hardware upgrades from OEM.

My old 6410 had a third party SSD in it; didn't stop them from replacing the palmrest, keyboard, LCD, and lid under CompleteCare.

Man I miss that thing... oh well. My M4800 is better.

Doesn't mean they won't, just not willing to risk it. My laptop BEFORE my last (E6520) never needed anything, ended up paying for the 3 year warranty for nothing. My current, now old, laptop (E5430) has already needed 2 warranty fixes. So for me, I work on stuff all day (IT End User Support), so the less I have to touch hardware outside of work, the better. I'd rather overpay for the hardware a tiny and get just what I need to never touch the insides than risk having to do everything myself because they won't support the warranty. After 10 years of doing it for a living, I despise even LOOKING at the isides of a computer. It's so bad my next desktop when I need an upgrade will probably be an off the shelf computer, won't even be willing to build one myself.

Meh, Spyder, Luxe, Ego, all the same thing, eh?

Not even close. They're both OS's that use .deb packages, they're far and away not the same thing.
