Everything is heresy. Only those behind the closed doors knows for sure.
However in my opinion I think Pbnation jumped the gun making all the Upton guys have green names.

JJ,

I think I understand your thought process on this one, but....

With the prize for the Series Championship (which my guys earned) being 1/2 of the 2012 PRO entry for the entire season - wouldn't it be a natural conclusion that upTon 187 cRew as earned their pro slot?

Are you suggesting maybe there will be a semi pro division? Does that really make sense - who would be in it? If you take all 10 of the current PSP pro teams and add in 8 or so NPPL pro teams (many of them are already overlapped with the 10 PSP teams) and throw in 1 or 2 D1 Champions you end up with a division of 20 - which on the surface seems a bit large, but I'm also not convinced that all the remaining NPPL teams (or even all the PSP teams for that matter) will carry over to next year.

So, if you take 6 or so current pro teams (PSP and/or NPPL) and relegate them to a semi pro division and then add in say the top 4 teams in both D1 divisions you end up with a semi-pro division of 16. However, you’ve just greatly diluted the D1 teams. You’ll end up with three divisions (Pro, Semi-Pro and D1) with 16 or so teams each – seems fairly flat to me. I would think the preferred count would be something more like 16 pro teams and then 24-32 D1 teams (Call it what you want – the division below pro). Shouldn’t the basic concept be that as we go up in division we go down in team count? Think of any other organized sport – there are millions of kids playing little league, a greatly reduced but still large number playing high school baseball then less in College and even less in the Minor League system and then finally less in the pro level.

I completely agree that Upton earned a pro spot in the 2012 PSP season.
I'm only stating my opinion based on the information I have been fed regarding the potential structure of a merged league next season.

Give the players what they want. They are the ones keeping the sport alive. There will always be a minority that says "X would make this better" or "Y in this league is stupid" but not everyone can be made 100% happy.

Honestly I really don't understand why anyone on the PSP side of things want a merger in the first place, especially if its with the NPPL which has obviously be dwindling in attendance over the years and has filled for bankruptcy a mere 3 years ago. Just doesn't make good business sense to me.

JJ, keep me honest here....

NPPL attendance is trending upwards since the new NPPL came about in 2009.

The NPPL that filed for bankrupcy in 2008 is an entirely different creature than what lives today. Different people, different financial model. Same format (mostly). Same HB venue. But you can no more point fingers at the current NPPL based on what happened with the Pacific Paintball NPPL than you can at the current PSP for what the Jerry Braun PSP did.

Why the PSP would want a merger is explained in other areas. If you really don't understand, I'm sure you can find a good post somewhere (check VFTD and ProPaintball archives). I could try to explain it, but it would take time, I'm feeling lazy today and I live in fear of a public dressing down by Raehl.

Jeff,
I think my opinion on the difference between the 'old' NPPL and the new regime would be uninformed at best seeing as my first National event was HB 2009 and I never played in the US before that.
However after this season and playing world cup for the past 2yrs, I am excited at the prospect of a united league and a healthy future for the sport I love.

I would say the trend is positive.
With Vegas being sold out, I guess that would keep you honest.

Jeff, the Vegas numbers do look good but there is no trend--yet. HB was up slightly this year. The two year numbers put 7-man teams at around 40-ish per event. (Leaving out the Pros and the 5-man & pump.) Chicago 3 & DC 3 weren't out of line with past numbers but Vegas, with the addition of a D4 7-man division and an atypical D3 7-man turnout is up considerably. I'll leave to y'all to decide what it means, if anything.

The only three options are capped full auto, capped ramping, or people's guns shoot whatever they can get away with while referees pull random gun penalties on people they don't like.

And the full auto one isn't really an option for legal/insurance reasons.

- Chris
THIS. HARD.

Current NPPL 15bps "Semi" is literally 5 pull ramp. Just get two fingers on it and she's legal. This isn't a skill. Ramping is the cleanest way to do it and both the PSP and Millennium figured that out 5 years ago.

I'll take one more shot at this:

I have no idea, at all, what format a merged league might use.

- Chris
I'm sorry if you thought I was asking you a question. I wasn't. It was a general question. Of course, nobody knows yet. I haven't seen any talk on here about mixed formats, so I was curious.
