Let's say that we didn't bring our A game and if you don't bring your A game against good teams, you lose.

Tx Storm is a good team. I think they are better than when we played them in Chicago (and lost). And Mayhem... we'll let's call a spade a spade. They haven't done well this year. But we knew we'd be in for a battle when we saw them play 187 (187 won, but Mayhem looked good). We lost in literally the last second, when they hung flag on us with time expiring. But there's no controversy, they got the flag in on time, if only just.

Just goes to show, this really is a game of inches and if you don't come to play, you might as well not come at all.

Next up is Denver Fury. I guess they are an NPPL D1 team, but they seem to be fitting right in. We saw them beat RNT and Tx Storm and they looked solid in both.

Little side story/history. In 2002, NEH was a Novice 10-man team. Back then, pro teams played one or two games against non-pro teams and one of the pros we played was Fury. Generally, these were great learning experiences (and a way for the pros to demonstrate how much better they were than other teams). We came out against Fury, there was a hail of that pink Imperial that stained your soul (and all the clothing and skin that was in front of it) and the game was over. I think it lasted a minute. Maybe 90 seconds. Mind you, this was IN THE WOODS.

After the game, Scotty Flint came over to us trying to be encouring. "Hey, guys, it wasn't that bad, it'll get better. Just stick with it. Really, it wasn't as bad as it seemed." It was depressing. The team that just beat us did so in such convincing fashion, they felt bad for us. Scotty didn't mean it that way, but after such an abhorrant showing, nothing was going to pick us up. But I always remembered and appreciated his effort.

I saw him yesterday for the first time since 2003. Reminded me of when I was still wet behind the ears at this game. He's doing a good job coaching from the sidelines (I think we may steal some of his codes) and has the confidence and calm of an old seasoned vet. Good to see him again.
