Anyone else think this about "Hunger Games"

It's basically a crappy, high production, hollywood ripoff of Battle Royale? Both are based on books but the only difference is that battle royale came out in 1999 and hunger games came out in 2008.

The author claims she didnt copy, but that ***** copied the **** out of it if you ask me. SMH Dumb no good stealing *****.

Sure, people fighting each other to the death is a new idea and definitely originated in a 1999 novel.

I've actually read The Hunger Games Trilogy. While the original book does have some striking parallels to BR the series as a whole is pretty good.

I only read them as I kept hearing about them over and over so I picked up all 3 for my iPad and turns out it's actually fairly interesting. Especially in the 2nd/3rd book when you get into the more society/revolution type things.

Also... BR isn't a new idea. It was just one of the first to really go balls to the wall with the gruesome nature of it.

As for the author copying it. I honestly can't say one way or another. As I said there's some things like "WTF that's similar" but on the flip side the idea has been tossed around for decades in one form or another (IE. Running Man using prisoners, Lord of the Flies, etc). So bringing it the way she did was something that is a natural for the target demographic of those novels. Plus, Battle Royale isn't exactly common knowledge in HUGE circles. It's reknown, but I can guarantee you it's not as well known as we'd think it is.

There was an interview with the director, whom actually isn't a total hack and probably a good choice, and he said they stayed as true to the source material as possible.

Obviously due to the Book to Movie format change some things had to be changed (to allow for run time, and for the paper to visual modifications) but otherwise it's pretty much a faithful telling of what's in the book.

I'm really hoping it's solid, and we get to see the entire trilogy as they cover some good stuff.

My girlfriend read all 3 of the books in 3 days, she is all about seeing the movie. I reckon I better read them before it comes out.

Just got back from The Hunger Games
I've seen Battle Royale, and this movie is a LOT better.
I haven't read any of the books, but as far as a matinee goes Hunger Games was easily worth my money. The music was good, the main characters are all likeable, and the editing isn't so spastic that you can't figure out what's supposed to be going on in the action scenes, which is a rare thing these days.
Not a perfect movie, but I'd go so far as to put it in the "really good, but somewhat overrated smart-ish action movie" category with Inception and The Matrix.

More like somewhat good and extremely overrated.

You lose a lot of character when you go from book to movie. It really relies on the actor to potray emotions as best as possible since the viewer knows how the character is supposed to feel.

Taking complicated pages of emotions and thought and tossing them into few second long blurps of acting ability. In most book to movie films, the scenery and placing seem right, but its the characters that are off.

Completely agree with you, although it is nice to have a visual to the story, and tbh, the characters don't look too far off from described in the books either. Great casting for sure.
