So anyways...

I'm checking the A/C pressure in my van, because it blows a bit cold but never seems to be cold enough in the car. Also noticed the low pressure valve leaks a little bit. So I rent a manifold gauge set. Connect low pressure to LP on vehicle, connect high pressure to HP on vehicle. Static pressure, It shows about 125 on LP side, and 150 on HP side. I turn the car on and A/C on. Stays the same, gauges don't move.

Is this a clog or am I doing something wrong here? Temperature outside was about 90* at 7:30 AM. Coolest time I could do this.

1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. A/C compressor kicks in. It's at least 108* here during the day, if the air is cold at all the A/C compressor kicks in.

so your assuming your compressor is kicking on, if the pressures dont change ever when the compressor is engaged or disengaged then the compressor isnt doing anything, a restriction would cause the high side to be really high. your low pressure is too high and the high side is too low. might have a broken valve in the compressor IF its actually kicking on

My probation at Honda is up, so now I start my apprenticeship. Hopefully ill be a Honda master tech within the next two years. Only downside is our apprenticeship has about a 80% dropout rate. I guess most people can't handle working 12 hour days plus 3-4 hours of home work and juggling family life.

Hey guys

Couple of years ago I came in here looking for advice on becoming a technician and finally the time has come. Went to a 2 year program at a tech school and finished up 1 year. I applied at a dealership as a detailer, got promoted to parts assistant after 3 months, after 4 months back there they offered me a technician job. I decided to take the job mostly for a pay increase as well as hands on learning.

My question is for the time being I'm on a limited budget. I have ratchets, sockets, screw drivers, wrenches, meter, test light, and a few other things. I have no air tools at the moment. I'm looking for a good budget set up to get me through a few months until I can afford some more well made tools.

What would you guys suggest I need for just starting out? I'm friends with all of the technicians out in the shop and they are more than willing to help me out with questions and tools when I need them but I hate to ask for tools all of the time. So what do you guys suggest for bare essientals as well as commonly used air tools. Thanks in advance.

PS we are a smaller dealership. I would be the 5th technician out in the shop. I don't have a tool chest yet but I have a nice box and trust every tech out there.

What brand will you be working on? It will help to suggest tools that are common for the manufacturer.

For me, the only air tool I really use ever is a 1/2" impact gun, and I use that only maybe once a week at the most. Otherwise everything I use is electric.

BMW is all about covers, so I use an electric Makita 1/4" impact, and it's the ****. We never really deal with rust, so I have an electric Snap On 1/2" impact for wheels that always does the job. Other then that I really have no need for air tools. Maybe a 1/4" air ratchet once in a while.

The best investment I personally think you can make as a new tech is a short 3/8" ratchet for drain plugs and a feel for the correct tightening torque for drain plugs. Also, a torque stick for putting wheels back on. Every time. Experienced guys will notice both those things, because they are two commonly ****ed up things by new guys, and if they see you going the extra step to ensure the basic work you are doing is being done with some care, they will feel comfortable working with you on some larger jobs.

Again, I can probably suggest some more common stuff depending on what manufacturer you are working for.

All you'll need is a 13mm socket.....

Whenever I work on chrysler/jeep that seems to be the only wrench I need to grab to tear apart half the vehicle

I picked up a good amount of tools from our MAC guy but he quit working for them and now the only guy that stops is the snap on guy. I usually don't buy tools from him unless it's repo tools. He does have buy 1 get 1 free on sockets I may have to jump on

I found a decent impact I'm going to jump on. If I was to buy a good set of impact sockets what are commonly used metric or standard. Everyone out in the shop said metric are pretty much the only sockets used now days
