Buying a new TV/Sound System

Hey I am moving into a new apartment next weekend and I'm looking to get a brand new HDTV. I have an overall budget between $600-700. I would like a decent size maybe around 42" or higher and great quality. I was also interested in having a nice home theater speaker system to go with it as well. I looked around best buy for some selections. If you guys recommend anything that would be great I will look into it

What is the budget for the sound system?

For a pretty good real home theater system, I'd probably say you're looking to spend at least $1000. Otherwise it's home theater in a box.

TV is my first priority as I have a cheap 5 speaker set I can set up for the mean time until I can afford a nice home theater set, any recommendations on a TV? Any noticeable difference between led and lcd?

You should look at them in the stores, a quality LED (from Samsung, for example) does tend to look better than an LCD.

Keep in mind that LED TV's/Plasmas mostly have glossy screen, and LCD's almost all have matte. I got a plasma for my pad, and the first day I installed it I had to move it because the glare from the sun through window would completely wash out the picture.

LED TV's sometimes use local dimming to give better contrast on dark images.

Honestly, either looks good. I have a 32" Samsung I've had for ~4 years and I love it. I got a 42" LG LED 120hz tv not too long ago and it looks amazing. The 120hz seems to distort images with patterns while moving...It's hard to explain but I ended up turning it off.

Start looking around and find reviews for ones you are interested in.

LED tv's in my opinion look better but are a lot brighter than lcd tv's. You need to calibrate you tv to bet the quality you get but overall they are better.

I could help you with a speaker system but I need to know the budget for it. Home theater systems rely on that HEAVILY. Just let me know.

He's probably doing that at this point, and he should be.

for $700 you can buy a pretty nice tv....most 42"-47" are around that price range too.

usually...home theater + apartment doesnt really go well. most dont have a big living room and its easy to piss the neigbors off.

besides, most hdtv's have pretty nice speakers anyway. that and your cheap 5.1 should be just fine in an apartment.

Ya i know but he said the tv is the most important thing. I was going to see what budget he had for the speakers AFTER the tv was bought. Going half and half for each would be hard.

Find the make and model you want, then check Amazon's Warehouse for getting a really good deal. A crazy idea too is to go look in local pawn shops and you can some times score really nice panels for a great price as well.

They still sorta make them. The VT series panasonic uses the old pioneer tech and the new 80" Sharp will be built in conjunction with the pioneer elite team.

nice compared to the old 32" sanyo box i grew up with .

my toshiba has pretty nice sound imo.......no, it doesnt have earth shattering bass that makes kitchen appliances rattle off the shelf, and 8 surround speakers to make my ears bleed. but it does sound clean and clear, does a pretty good job of noises coming from the L/R speakers for gaming.. and plenty loud enough for an apartment.

guess you could think of it like a soundbar, minus the sub.
