Dwarf Fortress: Fortress of Fury

Been following PC Gaming Thread and figured there was enough posts to justify Dwarf Fortress and its own thread.

For those of you who don't know about it, I recommend checking it out. I was just turned onto it a couple weeks ago and managed to get passed the terrible graphics and found one of the deepest games Ive played since my youth.

Check out http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0 to get started and I also recommend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ruf3t6PynI to help introduce you to the game itself.

Currently in my fortress I have managed to survive my first Goblin ambush, I got my bridge and traps setup before they could get into my Fortress and only suffered minimal loss. I am on year 4 with 100+ Dwarfs in my fortress is coming along nicely, I have my nobles rooms Etched in stone and my apartments currently getting stoned finished walls/floors. I will try to posts some screen shots when I get home from work.

Awesome game, I recommend to anyone who is into RPG's, Economy, Strategy, and building.

One quick question for some of you advanced Fortress Masters, what can I do with these goblins I have trapped up in my cages? I tried to have my Military go and kill them but they just all stood around him and nothing seemed to be happening? I read up that you can dump them in the pits but also read they have the chance of escaping? Thanks in advance!

This helps a lot too. Like it says at the top, its a tutorial for an older version of the game. 90% of the stuff is still relevant though, so you should be able to use this as a great reference. Military is completely changed so don't even try. I don't think there are any tutorials done this thoroughly for the new version of DF, but if there is, please post it.

As for those goblins you have a lot of options. Most of the fun options will destroy the cages though. I think regular goblins will only escape if you try and move the cages to a trade depot, so don't do this! Goblin thieves can escape all on their own when you try and move them too. If you want their gear you need to dig a deep hole and designate it as a pit. Then mark the goblins (not thieves or snatchers) to be dumped into the pit. They will fall a very long way and die at the bottom.

Or you can make it a short pit so they fall and break their legs, then train new military recruits on them. You can strip them of their equipment first, but I forget how to do that. I think you have to un-forbid the cage, dump everything, but then quickly un-dump the cage itself before your dwarves take that and leave the goblin behind.

I like the lazy method. Just build a drawbridge and smash the cages with it. Everything is destroyed completely.

this game is fun...but it is also frustrating that i manage to stay alive for less than the amount of time it takes to set the game up.

The first post had my interest in the game.

Then dayofthegreek ruined that interest with such an in depth spiel about killing goblins in cages.

Looks nice, but I see a few things right off the bat. You build a large wall to seal off that little area near your entrance, but you can still get into that area by just going up the hill (those little up arrows inbetween the Z levels), around the wall, then back down the hill again. Everything can basically just walk right around it. You can remove the up/down ramps from the D menu.

Also its kind of an exploit, but using stone stockpiles is a bad idea right now. Make a 1x1 zone and designate it as a garbage dump. Then D-B-D *** designates stuff to be dumped in the garbage zone. Mine out a floor and D-B-D the stone. ALL of the stone will be stored on a single tile. D-B-C will reclaim the items and you need to do this to start working with them again. I made a 2x2 garbage dump and built all my craft shops and masons around it. Near-infinite stone only 1 tile away.

Thanks for the tips, especially with the entrance. I am going to work on that when I get home and also venture down into some caverns below my fortress in search of some rare minerals!

****. There goes my second fortress.

I strip mined like 10 Z layers looking for metal ores but I had no luck. So I went deeper. Immediately hit some caverns and trogdolytes overran my base.

Just as this confusion was dying down and my military took care of them, a minotaur comes in and SLAUGHTERED my military dwarves without breaking a sweat and proceed to sack my fortress.

Next time my drawbridge goes up and danger room training starts ASAP. I will trade only for steel, weapons, and food.

If it makes you feel better, I dug underneath a river and then dug up expecting dry land.

Flooded my entire fortress.

Finally my fortress came to slow death after 6 years. The weather was set at temperate and I had to many dwarfs dropping like fly's from thirst over the winter from frozen water. I had plenty of alcohol for my dwarfs but I guess that wasn't enough to keep them from dying out.

Started , I believe my 5th fortress yesterday and off to a good start, I am trying to be a little bit more creative with my architecture and trying to micro-manage all aspects of my fortress. Wish me luck!

I almost did this too. Thankfully, mine was only a small pool of water so it only flooded half a floor.

I don't think dwarfs need water at all, just alcohol. If you had alcohol I can't imagine them dying from needing water.

Remember to use many Z levels. Spreading things over one floor means lots of walking. If you make your farms on top of your farm stock pile, with your kitchens/breweries and cooked food stock piles on the next levels down, your dwarves will only have to go up a couple of stairs to move things around.

Dwarves only drink water if you've got no booze, but I think sick/injured dwarves need water, and I believe baby dwarves need water.

I had up to about 108 Dwarfs in the fortress and was down to around 68 before I called it quits. I may have been able to survive if I stuck it out but it put a big dent in production and also lost both of my legendary miners.

Thanks for the advice, I plan on doing that with the current fortress.

Also, Is it possible to use underground water for drinking/fishing?

I'm 99% sure underground water supplies have no fish, but you can use them for drinking, and I'm fairly sure underground water can spawn monsters depending on what biome you're in.

there are several tutorials that come with save games so you can watch the video/read the tutorial and play along, you pick up the basics fairly quickly.

Going to try this housing design with my new fortress. Lazy Noob Pack includes some autobuilder utility so I won't have to actually draw that **** out myself.

Started a new fort in some untamed wilds.

I bet I won't last a year.

[edit]

Turns out my shallow metal is tin! how useless.

WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER.

[double edit]

Giant Jaguars just started pouring into the zone, thankfully they're all on the opposite side of the river, unsure if they can swim across or not.

[another ****ing edit]

Tin, silver, gold, nickel, and a bunch of other ****, but no metal I can use for armor and weapons. I've dug into 2 caverns, 1 of which I can't wall off, seeing as I dug into the ceiling, and I've dug far enough down to hit magma.

This fort is ****ed.
