So...

That's what I've been doing at work. For 2 days. Still can't find the little ****er. (it's a mouse) Escape hybrid, easily the most disgusting vehicle I've ever detailed. I didn't even bother trying to extract the seat upholstery, I just removed it all and threw it in the washing machine lol.

Showroom new

It's a permanent dye, you can use it on all grainy plastics.

$4000 worth of parts and labor later, the mouse is dead. All the wiring inside the car, literally every interior harness under the dash had to be replaced.

A friend called today, apparently they were painting a roof at his work (construction area) and got paint over spray on ~40-50 cars. He's giving his bosses my card; I'm going to try and get the contract to remove the over spray from all the vehicles.

The dealership I work with is dropping 10 cars of tomorrow to, there goes my weekend.

Yeah, I have a 3 bay (2 mechanics bays, 1 large detailing bay) shop that I detail out of. I currently work part time, and hold a wholesale account with a dealership. I do all the cars they send to auction, as well as some of their trade ins that they put on the lot.

My detailing bay. I've since made some renovations.

I definitely need more lighting in my bay. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it up.

That's my problem as well. I have 4 big fluorescent lights on the ceiling, and I have 6 on the walls, but the lighting is still poor compared to outside.

Haha wow, I have the same set up. Except mine has 6 above and 6 on the sides. But when I pull cars out to be checked out by the car sales man and they point out water marks, foggy windows, etc it pisses me off so much. Idk how many times I have told them I can't see EVERYTHING inside, that's why I pull it outside, to use the worlds biggest light bulb

Yeah I have to do my inspections outside or I always miss something. At night it's not bad, but during the day the light gets washed out really bad. I have halogens that I set up if I'm doing paint correction, but I need to pick up a Sun Gun.

I always miss things too. It's not like I can do it 100% perfect without sun or super bright halogens/led's. I definitely need to invest in a better light. I'd just rather not spend my own money, but whatever.

What do you use for dried on compound/polish or wax from god knows how long? I get trade in's regularly that quickly wax their cars and don't tape off before trading in. I use a fine steel wool and water but it takes a long time. Anything OTC? I tried a strong multi purpose spray and that didn't work. Also, what about plastic? Anything OTC?

I may just go indipendent if I can get my name spread out. The money just isn't there in dealership detailing. I have way better qualities than just econo bubble gum wash and auto tragic products

I think atomicbadgerman does pretty well at a dealership, but I know in my area recon guys never make over 12-13 an hour, and that's after years of working at the same place. Salesman are usually *******s too. I worked at hyundai/toyota/ford and hated it.

As far as dried wax I use IPA on the paint, and APC and a toothbrush on the plastic. If it's too faded/been there too long I dye over it.

What's IPA and APC? Are they OTC? They don't give me any time to dye things, and they will only use "auto magic" products. Which all they offer are cover ups. I told them if they would give me the oppertunity to show them pricing guides on items I use I could probably save them money and do a better job.

They started me out at 8. And I have been detailing for 4 years with my car and friends cars. Even after I fixed a lot of the prior employee's scratches on brand new cars my first week. I hope I get a raise soon or else I'm going to have to go else where or go independent

IPA is rubbing alcohol and water mix 50/50

APC is all purpose cleaner. Most dealership products are just "cover up" products. They almost always want a cheap job over a well done job.

I manage my recon department. The only reason I did well before I started managing is because we had a small staff, and most of them are lazy idiots who have no idea wtf they're doing, basically just wash monkeys.

One of the big things with dealership detailing/recon is absolutely, under no circumstances, take an hourly pay. If you want to make money at a dealership doing recon, it HAS to be commission. Most places in my area pay the wash monkeys hourly, and the actual detailers on commission.

If you want to advance, know your stuff, and make sure the people who matter know you do. Even if it's just little tips/tricks, it makes a huge difference.

Found out the company already has a detail shop they use, but my friend who works their passed out cards and I should be able to get at least 5-10 overspray removal jobs from this.

Pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but....

I bought a projeCt car and they have a bra on the car for a long time it appears because the front clip and part of the hood had a definite line in the clear coat, however that's not my issue, the clear coat isn't very bright, not very shiny, it doesn't have any white spots like most clear coat faded cars. I put some cheap wax on it for ****s and giggles and noticed there's red paint on the waxing pad I was using(the car is red), it's not chips or anything but the pad is slowly turning red.

Is the clear coat 100% gone?

If it's basecoat/clearcoat and you pull up red, then yes.

if it's single stage paint, then no.
