Just got a job...

At a Honda dealership as a sales person. I start on Tuesday. Anybody have any experience in the field and know stuff like expected quotas and commission percentage? Expected annual income?

I tried to do a search on it but most of the answers that came up were 10+ years old. Any help with these questions or car sales advise would be appreciated

They gave me a quick walk through of the base salary and such. I went in for an accessories position and then they offered me this one, so we didn't really get too into the commission benefits and what not. Unless they are the same as the person doing accessory sales.

In my search I came to see that basically you get ~20-30% commission; but how much does that translate to in cash amount on a new or cert. pre-owned honda? And do I get that money in my next check, even if the customer is someone for example that has exceptional credit and buys $0 down?

Depends on each individual car sold how much you will make....just know for most dealerships you want to tell a car every two to three days and most sales will be minimum commission deals which vary between 100-150
Also I've never heard of a dealership with salesmen on salary

It's hardly a salary. It's a weekly $350 + commission for what you sell. From the other stuff I've read it sounds like a 50+ hours a week job, so I guess they put that in to avoid paying you overtime and such.

I was kind of optimistic going into it that I'd make 1g on each car sale, but it seems like the entire markup is just barely over that.

Yeah, he's right. You're probably only going to make 15-20% of the dealer mark up amount for your first year there. Its not the sort of sales that makes someone rich. On the other hand, this may open doors for a management position in the future. Best of luck to you!

On flipping Hondas? Nope. However they are pretty easy to sell, so even with the smaller commission you'd probably sell twice as many Hondas as you would say Land Rovers.

I'll find out soon or later. It's definitely better than the job I have now. This thread was more to find out what is going to be expected of me, and what are some realistic expectations I should have going into it. Obviously they aren't going to outright say if you don't meet a quota, we are going to fire you...at least not in the interview process.

And I figured Honda would be a good dealer ship. It has a good clientele base, higher resale value, and good longevity.

Longevity is bad for a salesmen lol
Also they don't care if you sell any cars because if you don't sell cars you don't make money....half the time managers hire new salesmen just to get veteran sales guys to move a hit faster. Odds are you will be training for a month

If you're interested in being a salesman for an occupation, you might want to consider trying real estate. I'm 18 and work as a real estate agent to pay the bills. At the same time, only about 1/3-1/5 of licensed agents survive the first year but once you make a name for yourself, the potential to make over $100,000 each year is definitely there.

Just know the product well and don't be a dick. I feel like sales is one of the easiest jobs out there, especially with a brand as good as Honda. When I buy something I expect the person selling it to me knows at least as much about it as I do or I buy elsewhere.

Who the hell accepts a job offer with out asking what the compensation is? You are going to make 350 a week and it's going to be a while before you sell a car. Hope you have a sugar momma.

I try to do that but it seems that I know more about a product than the guy selling it to me a lot of times. Probably has more to do with the obsessive homework I do prior to a large purchase than ****ty salesmen though.

I feel like I'd sell a car in my first day. I mean I am seeing people saying that they average 15-25 cars a month. That's like selling one everyday almost.

I'd imagine you probably just try to pull a couple out on slow weekdays. Like Tuesday when I start there will probably be no one coming in hardly. When I went to interview, it was a Tuesday or Wednesday at like 3pm and no one was there. And then Fri-Sun is when you will sell one easy maybe 2+.
