Right now I have a pair of Work Lights.

Also, where can I get some gels for my lights? Can they just be transparent paper per-say?

I'm nowhere near qualified to tell you what lights to get, but I'd recommend getting a few chinese lanterns to start with. I've been looking to pick some up. If you put high wattage bulbs in them, they give a nice even light. You're going to want to buy real gels as opposed to improvising them, as they're not too expensive anyway. Really, if you only have $300 you're not going to be able to get a very good kit. Get some chinese lanterns and high wattage bulbs (spotlight and regular), and be creative about how you position lamps, by taping them to things or improvising light stands. Make due with that while you save up for a real kit.

Keep in mind, this is in my rather inexperienced opinion. Hopefully someone can help you out better. And again, look at dvxuser. And are you sure you don't have any lights available to you? My school has some very good lighting equipment that I have free access to, and am just starting to take advantage of.

Come to think of it tony, can you just link to www.dvxuser.com in the first post of the thread? You can learn a lot more from the search function on that site than you can by asking things here.

Ghetto light it up. Make sure your camera has a custom WB setting and use worklamps. They're dirty, but they're 15 dollars and can get the job done.

You want professional gels. Translucent paper isn't rated like gels are. While they may diffuse / color light, they can and will ignite.

H, you have all you need to create a ****ing wicked environment. The fog machine, even if its small it will probably fill your garage quickly. I used a fog machine this summer in an enclosure about the size of your garage, and it was kinda tricky to get the right amount of smoke.

Watch Transformers for the lighting, its always magic hour. I think thats the sweetest lighting, even though Mr. Bay doesn't know how to use it that well. The outdoor shots when they fight the scorpion is like midday, but when its an interior shot, you'll notice the light coming in is all yellow. I dunno, I think that would be sweet.

Lighting is an art, you need to create shadows. Experiment with a few setups, but I think you you're on the right track. I look forward to seeing it.

Is it a good idea to major in Video / Cinematography? There's a school near me with a great major minor program for Video and a cut back minor for photography that really interested me. I figure that's really what I want to do in life since the two are what I love to do. The ideal thing to do would be to major in business but i've toured the business schools and talked with professors and it doesn't seem like i'd have any motivation toward the classes.

What specifically do you want to be in life? If you want to go into television and broadcast, then attending school for that is a must. However, if you want to attempt to do something creative you really have to think about whether it's realistic in the first place. There are thousands of people making amazing, professional quality short films and features that you'll never see or hear of because the market's so saturated.

I'd love to do it professionally, but I'm taking the safe route of getting a regular degree and pursuing it in my spare time. Besides, when a production is looking for a director or a DP, I think they would look at your portfolio and not your education. I don't know personally, but I've heard many say that film school doesn't teach you anything you couldn't learn on the internet and in books.

It seems like it might be a better idea to volunteer/work on productions as much as you can, and use the money you would have to spend on film school to fund your own endeavors. But be sure to talk to people who are currently attending, and have attended film school to get their opinions.

Not a bad little contraption. Looks fairly smooth. And yes, you desperately need a good tripod.

While the wheels run on the track perfectly, I'm still getting an unacceptable amount of shake when I move it quickly. I think I need to work on getting rid of the tiny amount of give the track has to fix that. In the meantime, it's good for slow tracking moves.

While I'm at it, may as well post the other stuff I've built.

They're huge. But since the margins are blown anyway, might as well change them.

And it's not hamilton. Close, but not quite.

Here's a snapshot from a low budget horror movie I shot in the Midwest in August. It's in post right now.

Sorry for the super small pic, but you can kind of see a ghetto rigged dolly track I built for my horror flick, it's a shame I couldn't bring the system back home with me, because it was super smooth and it only cost me about $20 for 20 feet of track plus platform/wheels.

Sweet thread. I'll check back regularly.
