Welcome man, i personally would take the 08 Matrix then the SLG then the 2011 rail. PM8 is considered a pretty great marker especially for the price.

Ended up getting the 2011 pr. it has no scratches, has only been played 1 game, and had a very reasonable price for a new marker.
I had bought the marker before i read your reply Loki1313.
The 08 matrix had some paint chips and a small leak, and the slg would have needed some upgrades. They all would have been about the same price in the end so i went with the newer one. in the future i may change the bolt, and maybe the board if there is a better board.(havent looked into aftermarket internals yet.)

Yeah. Also these things aren't painted they are anodized. Never paint a paintball marker... please. I saw a guy do it to a Geo... Oh gawd.

dont get him wrong, a 2011 rail is a great gun. but i belive out of all those i would take a pm8 in an instant. smoother, lighter, is a pneumatic spoolvalve compared to a mechanical spool valve (correct me if my vocab is wrong). a pmr 9 and 10 had a macroline, ultralite frame, and good feednecks etc.

You mean what does the PM8 have that the PMR does not? Smoother shots, lpr reduces pressure operating the bolt so you can shoot more brittle paint (like tourney grade), much better solenoid, integrated dovetail on the grip (2011 PMR has some funky dovetail block in the grip, just an unecessary part), aluminum parts (PMR has some composite parts, plastic-ish).

Only upside to the 2011 PMR is integrated detents in the eye pipe, and an eye carrier, both of which eliminate the need for external eye/detent covers (less parts with screws, cleaner look).

PM8 leak could've been solved with something as simple as fresh lube or some replaced o-rings. Chips in the anno are only cosmetic, they'd happen sooner or later.

PMR isn't a bad gun, just not in the same class as the PM8. At least there are a couple good factors here: #1, you probably got the PMR new, so you're the first/original owner; #2, if you're relatively new to paintball or mid to high level guns, a PMR is a good starting point (overall maintenance is simpler).

ya not so much a mistake as an uninformed decision. each of those markers are good markers in their own right but the PM8 has more features that people like to have in a marker. though it is more maintenance which if you are new could be a pain. but you can learn paintball just fine with the marker you got and can upgrade to a better marker in a year or so. it's what alot of people do

having shot all three, definitely PM8 wins hands down. Just because paintball gun is newer or more expensive does not always make it a better marker

Ok, All of that makes me feel somewhat better.
Thanks for all of the feedback!

Im not new to paintball, but i am new to markers such as this.
(owned/built spyders and some other lower level markers)
I was one of those "i dont need an newer marker" kind of guys. I didnt have anything against newer technology markers, just didnt wanna spend the money on one.
Now i have a nice paying job and my girlfriend wants to start playing, so shes getting my spyder and im going to go for a upgrade. And me being satisfied with spyders im sure this will def be an upgrade.

PM8 is the "better" marker if you know how to tune it. Despite the proto name, it's a full featured high end marker that quieter, smoother, more gentle on paint and more efficient. With that said, if you are new to spool valve markers the rail may be the better choice because there is less tuning/maintenance. Shoot the rail, it's a fine marker. If you like it but want "more" consider saving up for a PM8 or DM series marker.

you made a good decision in not getting the SLG, go into those sub-formums and see how many problems they have, mistake from proto/dye.

I would also take a pm7/pm8 over the pmr, they just are better markers, but any pmr is not a mistake in any way. Like everyone said above, easier maintanence, less to go wrong. I prefer eye covers, but having them intergrated is still a nice feature to have. Make sure you always have an oring on your barrel as to not crack your eye pipe,

keep it lubed and clean and it will last you a long time, long long time.

Im assuming a 2007-09 Proto Matrix Rail would be most of yall's choice over the 2011 rail also? Just curious because i may be getting one of those too, and im deciding which to keep?

definitely. proto didnt make their line of guns difficult to decide between, like deciding between yellow and blue, the pmr was intended to be a step up from the slg.

EDIT - sorry, misread that post. ill leave my post up tho so you all can laugh at me.

2011 Rail has some features that i like over the original Rail, but that internal hose/noid assembly of the 2011 is too much like the Ion - not that it's bad, persay, just dumb to stray from the original design like that. The last thing you need is more hoses. Old Rail used a noid that's more typical of the dye/proto line, in that it sits right up against the body's belly. I guess they didn't want to mill the same internal airways into the 2011 body, probably saves them money.

What do the older Proto matrix rails have that no longer come on the new rail?
Do PMRs have a LPR?

No lpr on any PMR. Part of the reason why they're more budget-oriented.

Proto changed the solenoid on the 2011 Rail. I went into detail in the post above yours.

Hey so I fully feel the pm8 is a better marker, but I have a chance to buy pm8 for 275, or a rail for 150. What does the community think?

Everybody has that chance. Did you not just the posts above you? The PM8 is obviously the superior marker, so do you want to spend more money on a better marker or go cheap on a low end marker? Only you can make that decision.

get the pm8..... i just got my pm8 yesterday and all i can say is wow this gun is amazing. ive also owned a rail and i got to say that it is not even as close to the pm8 in regards to smoothness and sound.
on a side note if you want a marker that will fit nicely in between them then i would suggest looking for a dangerous power g4 with techt bolt. you can find them for about 200ish used maybe even cheaper if you look hard enough. they are very under rated gun imo. if you dont want that then definitely get the pm8
