Just got my 9/0 in today. The guy I got it from runs a small thrift store in Florida and has no idea how to ship the rod. I may just end up sending him one of my rod tubes, so he can ship it back to me.
Either way, I'm pretty excited about the reel. Not as nice as the center pin, but it will do.
The teeth on a sheepshead always make me LOL

i think i might have to get a centerpin set up over a new fly rig. any idea how much the paine creek customs run kenny? i am going to give the dude a call and see if he has any on hand this weekend. id probably be better suited getting an entry level okuma one (freakin 180 bones for an entry lvl reel lol).
also kind of clueless on rod manufacturers for them. i know you need a big ol' 9ft+ rod but manufacturer wise i have no clue what to look for.

paine falls customs run for $550. He may have some on hand. if you check his website, and the forum on it, he had one listed.
another site(fishing forum) i am on, they have centerpins that go up for sale all the time. the site is salmoncrazy.com

haha sorry
and yeah, $550 is steep. But mine was free
His prices are so high because he hand makes them, instead of just throwing some aluminum on a CNC machine
I had a raven matrix that was nice. Just the bearings on it werent the best. But from what ive read, theyre easy to replace.
How much would you be willing to drop?

well i am looking to spend 300-350 max. i have the line and all that crap so ill need the rod and reel.
i like this for the rod thus far:
http://www.fishusa.com/St-Croix-Wild...at-Rods_p.html
ive had a lot of good experience with st. croix in the past so ill give them the benefit of the doubt.
reel right now i am looking at:
http://www.fishusa.com/Okuma-Sheffie...in-Reel_p.html
okuma has become my new go-to (outside shimano) and ive seen good reviews of this guy thus far.
i wish i knew someone with one so i could get a better feel for a set up before i jump in. basically im not splurging on a g loomis or anything yet

The shefield is a good starter reel from what I've heard. I know a lot of guides in upstate ny use them as their reels for their clients. It won't spin as well as some other reels without some new bearings and/or them breaking in. But I know of a site that sells bearings for center pins specifically. I'll like it tomorrow when I get home.

I decided to switch it up a little this weekend and me and a friend went after some stripers. Managed one decent one, I'm guessing it was 15lbs or so. One of the fattest fish of its size I have ever seen.

Yeah, usually we will catch a few over 30 each year. The big ones should start showing up soon. *crossing fingers* He was incredibly fat though. I still can't believe it. Every year about this time I question myself with why I don't fish for these more. But then it starts warming up, and I flip a few bass out of some tress, and I remember why I spend most of my time chasing them instead.

How about no. Bass are ****ing ugly and don't fight as much as they should. They tire easily and lake bass are sluggish. I've noticed river fish with a decent current strip line almost every time.

fixed it for you.
so this past weekend was the Blacktip Challenge tournament. we decided to skip it this year since it was earlier than last year, cost more, and the surf conditions weren't favorable.
but still, big sharks were caught by the many teams that still fished.
9'6" hammer, 8'8" lemon, along with plenty of blacktips. also, the president of the shark club fished a spot he has called, "king kong beach" and for good reason. it landed a 12' hammer last year, a 10 footer last month... and this past weekend his 14/0 and 16/0 both got spooled... in the same night.
i have a feeling this year will be a hell of a year for shark fishing. assuming i put in the time and money for it.
i'm trying to get pics of the sharks that were caught, but the shark club forum won't load on my computer for some stupid reason. works fine on my phone though.
www.southfloridasharkclub.com/foro/ will take you to the forum, then just scroll down to "shark fishing reports, with pics." for anyone who is interested enough to see what's been going on.

Id still rather go for rainbows or cohos salmon any day over bass (I guess they are not truely fresh water though). Snakehead absolutely blow every thing away in terms of fight though, or peacock bass which are just giant cichlids. Only reason I would want to go to Florida again is to fish the canals for those guys.
Ive had big steelies give me insanely long and intense fights, bass just hit hard as hell and have beast mode short runs but you can tire one real fast compared to a big steelhead.
Edit: thanks for the link. I need to head up to cabelas in Michigan soon, probably going to hold off till the waleye run since it is only about a half hour from where we fish them.
