I should have been a radioman.


Who thinks the ssbn replacement should incorporate Vls capabilities and a significantly smaller ICBM payload? As well as either bow planes or the ice breaking fair water planes ? Because apparently I'm the only one who thinks the bn platform could be significantly smaller in the shipyard.

Last I saw SSBN-X merged BN and GN...


Looks like I misinterpreted. GN is gone once the boats get decommed, and the SSBN-X is going to have 16 tubes instead of the original redesign of 20 (contrary to the 24 you currently have).

Although the design of the SSBN(X) has not yet been fully determined, the boat’s design will reflect the following:
• The SSBN(X) is to be designed for a 40-year expected service life.

• Unlike the Ohio-class design, which requires a mid-life nuclear refueling, the SSBN(X) is to be equipped with a life-o f-the-ship nuclear fuel core (a nuclear fuel core that is sufficient to power the ship for its entire expected service life). Although the SSBN(X) will not need a mid-life nuclear refueling, it will still need a mid-life non-refueling overhaul (i.e., an overhaul that does not include a nuclear refueling) to operate over its full 40-year life.

• The SSBN(X) is to be equipped with an electric-drive propulsion train, as opposed to the mechanical-drive propulsion train used on other Navy submarines. The electric-drive system is expected to be quieter (i.e., stealthier) than a mechanical-drive system.

• The SSBN(X) is to have SLBM launch tubes that are the same size as those on the Ohio class (i.e., tubes with a diameter of 87 inches and a length sufficient to accommodate a D-5 SLBM).

• The SSBN(X) will have a beam (i.e., diameter) of 43 feet, compared to 42 feet on the Ohio-class design.

• Instead of 24 SLBM launch tubes, as on the Ohio-class design, the SSBN(X) is to have 16 SLBM launch tubes.

• Although the SSBN(X) is to have fewer launch tubes than the Ohio-class SSBN, it is to have a submerged displacement about the same as that of the Ohio-class design. As of late 2011, the design for the SSBN(X) reportedly had an estimated submerged displacement of 19,737 tons, though that figure likely has
since changed.

Interesting. The Boat I was on got the conversion to SSGN. Seemingly a good idea to load a submerged platform with guided missiles and hide it somewhere in the ocean. As for the new platform being quieter with electric drive could be, but my GOD! Electricians have enough to do on subs now so let's replace the entire drive system with an electrical one...... Oh yeah bet it takes the Navy 5 years to figure out the manning of Engineering Dept.

Sorry for the rant. I just remember working my butt off for years with the constant finger pointing.....Look it's an electrical problem " See it has a wire going in!".
