Recently bought a used computer, but its locked.

Okay guys, I recently bought a laptop off craigslist. I take it home and its locked. Of course I call the guy and he ignore my calls. When I say locked it requires a username and a password. What would I have to do to unlock it? Do I have to re-install the OS? Or what? Thanks Y'all!

in a desktop pc, you can remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then re-insert it to clear passwords, but you cant do that with laptops. Theres no way to get ahold of the guy?

You'll need to create a bootable CD with a password reset utility on it. Just google it and pick your poison. Most of them have tutorials on the website you download them from.

You could try the default admin account with a username of Administrator and no password (assuming this is Windows). If that doesn't work, there are ways to reset the passwords but it's too much work. Since you bought the computer and the guy didn't erase anything, your best bet is to wipe everything to remove all the garbage and start fresh. I've heard stories of people selling computers with malware preinstalled that lets a person watch the webcam without you knowing.

This is to reset a BIOS password, not an OS password. And there are many laptops that have CMOS batteries too (although they are not always replaceable).

I wouldn't freak him out. If the seller wanted to spy on his buyer I doubt he'd leave a password on the computer risking that the buyer would wipe the hard drive.

Not if it's the Windows password.

I dont think you have to worry about him spying on you. Most likely he stole the laptop and was just trying to unload it fast.

I would go ahead and reinstall the OS because you have no idea what kind of crap he loaded onto it.

It's best to assume malice when dealing with Windows security. The laptop will probably have the cd key on a sticker underneath. Download the ISO from Microsoft and start fresh.

Anytime you buy a computer from someone always wipe it and do a 100% fresh load of your OS of choice IMHO. I don't trust other people's ability to keep malware, etc, off their computers and/or the possibility of them using loggers to obtain your information.

What kind of laptop is it? In all likelihood, its stolen. A few of the laptops I've deployed have been stolen, and let's just say that if it has computrace, its going to earn you a visit by the police.

Also, the key on the sticker is an oem key, not a retail key.

If it's a Windows password (ie: someone forgets the password and can't get back into the computer) You can do the following, instead of reformatting.

Download NT Offline Editor on another computer (it'll be an ISO file).
Burn it to a CD (it will be a bootable CD).
Boot to CD.
Follow the directions (it'll ask what OS you are running, where the config dir is, and what you want to do with the accounts [you and promote accounts to admin, remove passwords, change passwords, add passwords without going into windows])
Save the changes.
Reboot and win.

Of course use this software at your own risk.
