Open class? Stock Class? Woods? Speedball? Rec? Tournament?

For open class speedball / tournament play, tactics, strategy, and drills are pretty much the same as what is already out there for semi.

My personal favorites are the Dynasty Dysected videos. If you want to see the same drills done with a pump lookup Sonny Lopez on YouTube. Those videos cover the basic foundations.

For more advanced stuff, like lane control, it's best learned from more experienced players on the field.

Most things that you do in non-pump play carry over. Work on fundamentals like movement, snapping, getting first shots on target, communication, etc.

Some things that are unique: pumping with both hands (shoot ambidextrously), reloading (especially stock class with 12 grams and stick feeds)

Shoot, move, communicate, and determine the best way to do each of those on any given field before you play it.

Snap shooting is key in pump play, as well as constant movement to get better angles on opposing players. Above all, HAVE FUN!

Work on all your basics.

- Gun control: How you hold, carry and move with your marker (so many people practice for years holding their marker incorrectly. Regardless of what anyone says, there is a correct way to hold a marker, and if you dont hold it correctly you will not be as accurate as you COULD be.) Snap shooting, this is one of those things there is no shortcut for. You just have to practice over and over and over til you can hit something with the first shot regardless of whether it is moving or not. Practice until it feels like you are on autopilot, then practice some more. Running and gunning, same deal. Practice practice practice. Your marker should be up, and the bolt of your marker should be sitting at the center of your nose just below your eyes. For a good example of this watch any video of Derrick Obatake (sp?) from LA Hitmen playing.

- Field awareness: Angles, blind shots, lanes. Walk the field. Stand/kneel behind every bunker and figure out every possible place you can put paint and where it can hit you from.

- Movement: Using bunkers to minimize exposure while making a move, running with your gun up, hitting a target while moving, laying down your own supressive fire. Learn to use bunkers down field as well as those directly in front of you. For snake players, learn to play at the knuckle and away from it.

- Communication: Constantly relaying where your opponents are and where they are shooting to teammates, listening for teammates communication, keeping track of G count, coordinating movement. Communication can make or break a team. I have seen teams consisting of nothing but seasoned pros play against some well coordinated pump teams and the pros got romped on (NPPL HB 2008) because ultimately, the teams they played practiced together and their communication was on point.

All these things are important regardless of what you are shooting but are all magnified when shooting a pump. Pump play really makes you hone your fundamentals and polish your game. Besides that....PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

I like to work outside to inside. Try not to battle more then one at a time. Shadowing other players out with bunkers/obstacles. If nobody is shooting at you, you should be moving closer or to a better position. Never shoot more then one shot over the top of any bunker and only to take control of a lane back or put a player in for a move. Head checks will keep a multiple players from advancing. If they know you know where they are they're less likely to move. Sometimes it takes just a quick look to keep them in their bunker. Try to position yourself in a bunker so you can play high and low right and left. This will give you the best field awareness dominance and position to battle and alow room to alternate different places to snap shoot from. Do not let yourself get in a rhythm mix it up high low left right or you will loose to anyone that can recognize your faults. Don't be afraid to back off a bunker as long as your in its shadow. This can open up shots and allow you to see more of the field. Listen and watch the paint see the angles it will give away position and distance. When bunkering wait for your shot don't bother shooting before you have a shot it's a dead giveaway you're making a run threw. Practice drop shots. Use low bunkers to hide the trajectory of you paint. Work on that snap shot its key to success with a pump and buy the best paint available. Left over paint should be used for snap drills. One ball check in. Pick a target snap from behind a bunker and try and hit the same spot every time. Then switch hands or shoot one shot right then left switching hands each time. This will make you just as deadly right as you are left. Work form then speed. Off the break shoot ware they are gong not at them you have to lead them to give the paint time to get there. More the distance the more you have to lead and aim higher to insure paint will hit its mark. Speed of play distance and trajectory should become second nature after practicing it over and over.
Dynasty Dysected videos will teach proper form it's great for that. Drills are good as well as mxmtl suggested.
