indeed.. If all of my gear blew up and I had to dip into my college savings to purchase only one body and one lens, it'd be a gripped 40D and a 70-200 f4. or maybe a 2.8, depending on how much longer I'd be up to taking out school loans haha

Thoughts on 70-200 f/4 IS vs Non IS in terms of the price being worth the extra performance? I'll be buying used in Canada for around 900-1000 for the IS and can get a non is for about $500.

i personally would rather have a 2.8 non is over a f4is if you are planning to spend that much. But between the two you listed, I dont think the IS is worth the extra 500$.

Are the $5 ebay polarizing filters any good to use or should I stick to a name brand from Adorama or B&H?

Might as well wrap some saran wrap over your front element and darken it with a sharpie.

I found a good deal on a Tiffen filter. But, the box is different than what I got one of my old filters in, and different than all the other boxes I can find. So, is this a legit Tiffen?

Let me help you.

70-200 2.8 IS II > 70-200 2.8 IS I > 70-200 2.8 non IS > 70-200 4.0 IS > 70-200 4.0 non IS

But the 70-200 2.8 non IS is cheaper than the F/4 IS.

I can get my hands on the 70-200 2.8 IS I. My scare is that I often find people saying they had them serviced by canon not long ago, my guess is cause theyre so old. I don't feel comfortable with an old lens just due to obvious reasons. I need IS for video, so either f/2.8 IS I, or f/4 IS. I think I'd be spending $200 more on the 2.8. I'll be moving into photography as well. So suggestions guys?

I've never had an issue with old glass at all, I had a non IS that was older than me (I'm 20) and it worked just as well as any brand new in box glass I've had, even better in some cases as the focusing/zoom ring was a bit broken in and smoother.

Old glass is not a problem. The photo below was shot with an 18 year old 300 f/2.8:

Hey guys Im pretty new to this photography stuff, i recently got an EOS T3 and have been reading up and experimenting with it. I mostly would like to get into this because im mainly a graphic designer so its always a plus to use your own images when ever possible. Id just really like some imput as to what i can possibly improve on. Heres one i took today, i only have the kit lens it came with, no developing in this photo.

Shot with ISO 100 18mm f/4.0 1/40 sec

You should post this kind of stuff in the monthly What Did You Shoot/Post Process This Month thread. Not a bad shot. It's a little dark for my tastes, but not very underexposed. All you need to do is straighten the horizon. Post it to the monthly thread for more feedback.

what do you guys think about this lens. I'm new and would be shooting mostly nature and wildlife.
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR II Vibration Reduction Lens

If this would not be a good choice what would be in the 400ish range for a new lens. this will go on a D90

Question for the old school photographers in here

Hey,
I haven't been on here in forever, probably a few years, but I recently got an old camera from a friend of mine to sell for him. It's a Chinon CE-4, I have a few different lenses for it as well as a leather carrying case. I was wondering if someone can help me in terms of exactly what lenses these are as well as what I should do with it...sell it as a package or individual items...

Its the Chinon CE-4

First lens says Sakar Automatic 1:2.8 f=28mm 58* no. 399832
second says Huya HMC 58mm Skylight (1b)
third one is huge, vivitar 75-205mm 1:3.8 close focusing auto zoom no. 22739419 *58mm
Fourth says Mirage 1:2.8 f=135mm no. 8031465

last i have a flash, its a vivitar zoom thyristor 285.

someone please help me out. i have no idea what i have sitting in front of me here...

You've read the wrong label on the second lens. Hoya HMC would be a filter on the lens.

Of the three you've named, the Vivitar still has the most usefulness, but none are worth more than around $30.

Hey guys. I'm very new to lightroom, and mostly processed my pictures in a dark room at my community college(dont have enough money for a dslr). I was messing around with lightroom and some presets i found online, and love what it came out to, but i do have a newbie problem. The image ends up with a purple tint, can someone help me correct this?

Here's the image:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/3018789...n/photostream/

Thanks

Edit, if it helps at all, the image was taken with 160 Portra, I tried for a b/w conversion. I'm just gonna shoot Tri-X now I think. ALSO! what b/w film would you guys recommend?
