no experience with it but from what I've read it sucks the light and sends it everywhere. A bounce card would essentially due the same without sending the light out everywhere (to the side and behind) so you have more control with what you want to do.

Lol.
The guy using it last night seemed to be getting good pictures from what I could see on the screen.
Curious if it's actually worth a damn.

I've talked people into buying them at the shop... But that's the salesman in me...

I agree with fain, a 3x5 card and a rubber band would pretty much get you the same thing in a situation like that...

If you are shooting in a room though, you can tell a difference.

room w/white ceiling just bounce it straight up, drag the shutter for ambient fill. Though, it would put some light on as fill. But you're losing the effectiveness of the flash. If you are going to light a room instead of paying for the fong dong I'd buy a cheap flash, a cheap radio trigger, and a cheap stand. For $100 or so you can use it for a LOT more than what a piece of plastic gives you. I've never run into a situation where there wasn't a more versatile/better way to do it.

looked through his facebook. Looks like most of it would be the same as a 3cent white card w/rubberband IMO. :lesigh: Use the power of the flash via bounce card to freeze, drag the shutter to let in ambient to where your focal length won't introduce light streak. Once you figure out the right shutter, focal length, and ISO you can make a night club look like it's almost naturally lit. Adjust FEC as needed and you are good to go.

It has a learning curve to it that most won't bother to learn but your camera + flash will do a lot where "accessories" just allow you to think that you're doing a good enough job.

Maybe, but it doesn't mean it's the wrong way of doing it, it adds some fill to the room while diffusing the light on the subject, and it's going to stay in place a lot easier in a club environment than a card and a rubber band IMO.

oh, I know. I just don't see the use in it. Some people like them, some people don't. For $60 I think it's a ripoff so that's why I'm suggesting much simpler ways to do it.

On a very wide angle (most clubs shots are like this from what I've seen) it is good to have because it will scatter the light around you and you won't have falloff. But if you are doing anything beyond 30mm (on crop) or close up there's better ways to do it.

Sometimes flashes have built in cards, I know my sb900 and sb 28's do. They work, but sometimes you need a bigger bounce. If you find yourself using it alot, invest in some Velcro and poster board.

I have an sb-600. Only thing it has is the little diffuser piece.
But I just remembered I have some poster board. Time to cut some pieces out

a lot of it just depends on ceilings, and what your flash will bounce off of. So an index card will throw the light forward onto the subject, the rest will scatter and light the room depending on intensity. All you need to do then is make sure your shutter/iso/ap is all where you need it to get the effect you want.

I've done some off camera flash stuff with a band/drummer and even at 1/40th @ 70+ mm I was able to freeze the drummer and still allow ambient to fill in behind/around him to make it look natural. You'll just have to find the sweet spot settings and go from there.

Really, the Fong is a niche thing. I find that in a situation where bounce would be inappropriate (high ceilings for example), a $20 Sto-Fen works just fine for diffusion and takes up less space in my bag.

A few video questions.

tokina 11-16+t2i+glidecam hd-1000
yay or nay?

Also anyone ever use the Manfrotto 561BHDV-1? Looks like a really nifty monopod.

that seems like way too wide of a lens for video in my opinion. I realize there is a use for wide shots, but i feel like that would really limit your shot options. If i was only going to have one lens, it would be something in the normal range like 24-70ish range, regardless of if I was doing photo or video, but that is just my opinion.

Friend of mine has 4 weddings worth of photos and wants me to edit them, idk what a fair price to charge is. What is the going rate for basic touch ups?

Considering it's on a 1.6 crop I don't think it's too unreasonable, plus I can always use a 35 prime if I need something different. This lens would see a lot of use for landscapes.
