Yeah I'm looking for one with video capabilities. That way I can basically cut down to one device instead of using both a video camera and a picture taking camera. I currently have a Canon HV40 so would a T series camera be anywhere in the realm of the quality/capabilities of an HV40?

I talked to my friend Eric (ecprevatte) and he recommended the same ones (used of course) as you along with a lens of equal value such as a 17-40 F/4 or a 70-200 F/4 Non-IS. I told him my hands are quite shaky as I have a bit of a tremor so I need all the IS I can get but I noticed that same lens is double the price with IS. He said things could get quite pricey with that and what I wanted to use it for (city shots at night as well as day and nightlife aka dark clubs). I imagine lenses that can be used at night are very expensive.

Thanks for the response.

it helps, but on some of the lenses the in camera microphone will pick up the noise of the IS motors working (not that you should be using the on camera mic in the first place, but still) If it were me, I would much rather invest the extra money in a tripod and if I already had that, a shoulder rig of some sort. To me, those are of better value then the IS.

I don't offhand know the specs of the HV40. But I know people who were selling off their panasonic HVX cameras (3-4k$ cameras) to buy canon 7ds if that helps your decision at all. For sports I would rather have a video camera with af abilities, otherwise dslrs win out in my book.

IS helps with hand held shots a ton. even when using rigs and trying to create dynamic camera movement, there is still some camera shake that IS can help with. you can also take away camera shake in post.

Yeah as of right now my main focus wouldn't be sports but rather just life and scenic shots. An HV40 if you didn't already know is a consumer camera and not a professional level one as I could never afford one of the 5-7k professional ones I envy.

A few months ago I found a site that was basically a huge database of images and lighting diagrams that were used for each image that people uploaded, but I forgot to bookmark it, does anyone know what site I'm talking about?

Protecting Camera On The Field

A buddy of mine is an amateur photographer and would like to take some pictures of my next tournament. The only issue is his equipment is pretty expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect his camera while on the field? They sell cases but they cost around 300$. I know people are out there taking pictures all the time and there has to be a way to protect the camera without spending an arm and a leg. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Plastic bags, towels, jerseys, custom cardboard boxes, rain covers, neoprene covers, field smarts. Lots of possibilities.

I currently own a Rebel XTi that has done me well and I have learned enough over the years of using it such that it has not held me back, I believe. I am looking at upgrading and getting a second body, for a few reasons. I shoot all around, but like to shoot some sports stuff, mainly firearms training classes and shooting sports as well as the usual P&S snapshot type stuff and taking pics to sell items online. I am a Canon guy so I am considering the T2i, T3i, 60D, and 7D. I will likely not buy another camera for some time and will also likely never switch to a full frame sensor. I understand the T2i to be almost the same as the T3i and the 60D to be a little bit better but not mile ahead of the T3i. The 7D is twice the price. Kinda sorta stumped here. The real lacking department for me now is the low light performance of the XTi, or rather the fact that its higher ISO settings get really noisy really fast.

Comments and advice is appreciated.

When I had the XTi I made the jump to the 7d. I couldn't justify spending the money on the t2 or t3. The features weren't that much better the the xti and still no where close to the 7d. The 60d is something to maybe consider. If I had to do it again, I would still make the jump to the 7d. The reason why I went ahead and got the 7d is I knew if I got anything less I would just end up needing to upgrade to it so no reason not to buy something in between.

I'm pretty sure the 7d is still under the canon loyalty program. If that's the case then i would go with that. Last time I looked they were right around $1000 through them.

Yea, they were $1087 so he would basically be selling his XTi for $500. The only catch is those cameras are referbs

That is fine but to lose the extra camera would not really be worth the savings.
