i go to my local albertsons to buy some groceries, and it comes with a free plastic bag.
just some cutting and hook it around the hood of my 70-200 and extend it all the way back to the body.
it works if its not showering, just light rain

canon 75-300. about $200 on B&H, though available on other sites as well (cue miss O). Also, used for very cheap.

garbage bags are cheap, reliable, disposable, available everywhere, light, easy-to-use, and serve multiple purposes.

either adorama or bh has a 70-210 f/4 and they are only like $125ish. That would probably be your best bet. no USM motor but you don't change aperture when extending.

you can find people selling them for less than $100 cuz they hate it. lol I had a friend who wanted to sell me one for $50 and I even passed on that.

70-210 f4 is probably the cheapest/best

rjtjr, try KEH. The 70-210 is a long discontinued lens, but it can often be found on the used market.

In addition to the 70-210mm f4, I'd recommend it's successor, the 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 USM, which is similarly priced but superior optically and has a faster autofocus motor.

I would avoid the 75-300. If you're shooting a Rebel or xxD, consider the 55-250 IS as well.

Way back when I wanted to get a real nice nikon setup and ended up settling for a d40x.

I pretty much isntantly realized the error of my ways, and its taken up until now for me to realize "No, you cant just deal with it, get something else."

That said, Looking around on eGay, I think I might be able to get 450 or so for this thing w/ accessories.

What kinda camera (I'll go canon if its a better deal) should I go for?

I'm going to eventually buy a flash setup for it (If not right away)

And I'll most likely end up with a macro, a telephoto, and a lense good for general snapshots.

I'm not a photographer, I dont pretend to be one, but when I feel the need to take a pic and have it come out good, I'd like to have the right tool for the job.

It always amazed me how nice a d80 with a good piece of glass would take a photo that looked 10000 times better than my 40x was capable of.

I want that.

Hook me up.

It isn't the camera's fault that you suck. In the grand scheme of things there is not much difference in image quality between the d80 and the d40x.

Okay, let me rephrase that.

The 40x needs AF-S lenses. **** a buncha that.

The d80 ususally comes with nicer glass.

I'm after something that'll take normal AF lenses.

ETA - Also thinking about a full-frame. Not sure if necessary.

because if you dont understand the pros/cons then you are wasting your money that you could be spending on glass anyways. Glass > Body

You're mostly right.

What can you recommended?

I'm debating trying to find a real good deal on a older body, and then spending some money on a nice assortment of glass

Or just buy once cry once with a decent body, get a couple of lenses, and add more later on.
