If you want 30 seconds in the daytime, you're going to have a really touch time, you'll have to shoot at the lowest ISO, and smallest aperture, ie f/22. even then you may need to enlist the help of a Neutral Density filter, it's a filter that darkens the image without effecting color.

@rea - you can get a lightmeter, but it's cheaper just to guess and check

I figured that but it couldn't hurt to ask if there was some reasoning behind it.

f/36 seems kind of silly to me. diffraction kills IQ at such small apertures...

Yeah that's true - personally I'd rather shoot either at night or in faining light, maybe dusk.

While on this topic, I was planning on doing a 2:30 exposure at a nearby river / waterfall. Was wondering how to meter this situation with camera in BULB mode and using a wireless shutter release?

I guess it depends on how long you want the exposure.

EDIT: Doh too late haha.
Well im saying for most nikons. They can onky go down to 200. Canons go to 100.

download an app (if you have something to have the app on) that calculates exposure. If not there are some exposure tables on the internet you can print off.

You have to take the exposure that your camera gives you (say f5.6 @ 30sec) and then just double time as you go up in aperture or down in ISO.

So ISO 1600 f5.6 30" would be 60 sec at ISO 800 and 120" @ 400 and so on. I'm pretty sure that's right but I'm going from memory.

Ahh that makes perfect sense. I'll have to give that a shot, thanks.

Im putting this in the FAQ cause its a dumb question and i feel that i should know this already, but i dont, soo....

How do you preserve the exif data when you post process? Sometimes i lose it and sometimes i dont, and im honestly lost on how to make sure the exif comes out of post fully intact every time.

Im using CS5 if that makes any difference.

i always hit Ctrl+Shift+S which if i remember correctly is "Save As". I'll have to check & see if im missing some kind of check box to preserve the exif.

i'd go for the 40D.
some differences include live view, mp, auto sensor cleaning, screen size

I keep on going back to my 40d experience, which proved to me that it was garbage (much like the 1d3, which I also ****ing hated). The high-iso noise was unreasonable, colors were awful, and it was generally a ****. The DigicIII was balls, I think... that's what was up. Sensor cleaning, live view, and a higher fps is not worth these losses.

My 20d, my ex's 30d, and my current 5d, on the other hand were excellent in comparison. I'd recommend going for the 30d and using the extra money for glass.

something else like the t2i should be out here pretty soon. T1i came out q1 of 2009...t2i q1 of 2010.

I'm guessing it'll be announced here pretty soon...or at least the equivalent. The last three years the rebel has had a 1 year cycle.
