Thread of the Week: Name the Grim Reaper

Blunt is always best:

What is most common cause of death of promising (young, or maybe not so young) teams?

Kamo Killas, Underground, Warzone, PTI, Adrenaline Junkies, etc... Lots of teams with lots of promise all dying an early death. Although we dont' have to limit the discussion to newer teams. HAF was around for years before they split up. So was NEX.

I'd say the main killer of teams, would be players assuming the grass is greener on the other side and lack of funding or the loss of funding... (funding as in not just sponsorship, but a players ability or team's ability to pay for events and the associated costs.)

I have to agree with Koker but I would also add mis-leading information to get a player onto a team. Especially the newer, younger more naive player. They're likely not to read between the lines and although the grass looks greener they don't have the knowledge or experience to ask why.

I wouldn't put Kamo Killaz on the "Dead" list - that team morphed into what is now upTon 187 cRew.

While many of those players are gone, the team is still alive - under a new name.

Nope, they're dead.
Otherwise, Adrenaline Junkies didn't die until 2009.
Nor PnL Kids until 2005.

And the cause of death: a larger organization assimilated them.

Money, time, commitment, assimilation/cherry picking. I agree with those factors.

To turn the question around... For the teams that didn't make this list because they survived, what made that possible for them? Would/could the Hurricanes exist without Jeff? Would 187 cRew exist without Dave? Would Section 8 exist without Butchy? Is survival of a team reliant upon having a solid individual with the ability and means to maintain that organization?

Money and time. To compete at a high level you have to give up alot and people dont want to give that up. They dont want to spend the money it takes to play every weekend

The grim reaper is definitely the commitment combined with the grass is always greener. But if there is a strong leadership/owner of a team, they can keep the team alive as long as they want.

Gabe,

What keeps good teams together....

Leadership (off the field) - committed to making something great
Funding (whether it's the players, sponsorship or a sugar daddy)
Team Chemistry
Talent

In that order.

To answer Jeff's question:
Better teams picking up or consuming teams or players
Desire for something different (individuals don't always want the same things out of a team)
Greener grass - always thinking the next thing is the best thing.

The two reasons most 16/17 year old players quite the sport:
Cars
Girls

It's not easy to keep a large group of people together to play a luxury sport like paintball. Even harder in an economy like this one. Now a days....people are working harder, to make less....and unfortunately...at the end of the day, it's the hobbies and extras that are going to get getting cut first.

Not I good sir, when moneys tight I cut the fast food/ going out to dinner, and buying things I don't absolutely need, to afford to keep playing, I refuse to give up my favorite thing to do just because of tight finances.

Ultimatly teams die because the leaders quit. Otherwise the name carries on with new rosters.

Players quit generally because of Money and Time. For younger guys College is a hard adjustment. 10x more distractions ontop of less time and less Money. For everybody else I think Paintball works its way down to a lower priority. Otherwise like Josh said you make it happen. Most of the people still in it arnt rich they just budget the cash and time to play. Thoes who quit dont make the money or time and say it doesnt exist.

Especially now that's definitely true. Atleast for us who are post-college/in the real world, budgeting one's funds in life usually determines if playing paintball is feasible. I could be driving a BMW, or playing paintball...
