replacement ammo for vortex

Hi all,

as we all know those dang nerf vortext rockets are geting harder and harder to find, what i am wondering is this, what could we use as a new standard for law ammo, what would be safe and effective, im thinking something round would make for great ammo...any ideas?

Someone on a post somewhere said the Hasbro stopped making the pocket vortex even though it was their top selling item. Probably a lawsuit somewhere did them in. The only places I can find them maybe is Toys R Us, Amazon, and Ebay. All my other sources have now dried up. Went out today lokking for some and none could be found. There are some people that have posted have found them on other sites. But keeping those locations to themselves. If its true they are not making them any longer they will be out of the stores soon and we will be paying a ridiculess price for them on Ebay.

I am going to do some testing. The softer kids tennis balls seem perfect.

i already tried that. i bought 2 inch balls that fit perfectly in a 2 inch pvc or jcs barrel ( i dont have a havok so i didnt try it)

BUT----- these rounds are very light and wouldnt have the same range as a nerf. but they would work for close up a/t guys at like 50 cents each you cant go wrong on putting a few in your pocket

i took 4 types of ammo to the post office to weigh them on an accurate scale

I dont know what i did with the paper right now but ill post it asap. the 2 inch stress balls where about 1/3 the weight of a nerf.

They seem to be made out of the exact material as a nerf.Well the ones i have are anyways

I have enough NERFS stockpiled in storage to last me a while. No tennis balls or Milsim.com rockets for me yet. I just checked Amazon.com and they have 17 NERFS available thru their suppliers. So someone go get them.

This has been a concern for the group for a while. There are people beta testing different readily available materials, but we're not really seeing the best results or results that would be equal to or superior to the nerf pocket vortex. The vortex just meets too many of the standards we have, with relative accuracy, distance, weight and safety in case a player puts their head in the way.

the jcs round is the next best thing right now. but--- it costs way too much and is less durable than a nerf

arent those having issues exploding when shot at any reasonable velocity?

Wasn't Damon from Scenario Dreams making his own nerfs at one point?

Scenario Dreams rockets didn't work out well. He started to sell them as Practical Rockets after testing them. Fins were too weak and foam was too stiff.

JCS Rockets will rip, tear, or split if it hit hard surface within a certain range or clip a branch. I had 6 and 5 of them ripped or tore within the first three usage. The 6th one is still intact cause I didn't shoot it.

Now if we can find something like this in the right size it may work. This one is 1-1/2" x 4". You know I wonder if we can get a stress ball company to custom make us a rocket.

Life would be so much easier if tennis balls worked out or Nerf kept up production of the pocket vortex

Somewhere in China is a factory with all the molds and tooling to make these Rockets. I bet they would love to continue production. Why doesn't one of you young enterprizing fellows go buy cut a deal with hasbro.

Boom, here's the deal on that. One of our team members that use to run various paintball businesses (big time paintball industry businesses) has been in contact with his people in China. He is still working on this, but the last time he talked to his people, they didnt have alot of intrest in producing them as 10,000 units would have such a small profit margin. And 10,000 was all our guys was willing to flip the bill for.

Now if anyone want to flip the bill for 20,000 or 30,000 units, we can hook you up with the right folks.

Now our team engineer and I have been discussing doing our own molds. He has a source for the knock pin molds so we are good there. The material is easily accessible on the net. Right now we are thinking on the designs. And I am looking at what some of our other members here are working on as well. But it is very probably that we will go to making our own ammunition. not sure on the molds, but figure a couple hundred and then one to two hundred for the foam and that shold make lots of rockets, lots.

Dont know if Nerf will start production up again. That's actually fairly likely they will as good a seller as these were/are. They like to rotate products in and out of productions to stimulates sales on items. And our guys source may not be in the same factory Hasbro uses. Never got that in detail on it with him. So they may have to make molds and that factors into their price and profit margin.

What our thinking is at this point, if we do our own, they'll probably be a cross between Nerf's and JCS. One solid piece based off the Nerf but with a thicker tail shaft. And then our engineer was thinking on the possibility of a bit bigger on the diameter to make a closer fit in standard PVC. He figures if we are gonna go through all the trouble to make them, we can improve them or make them in any configuration we want whether its for ease or production or better performance.

Its gonna be too much to try and do an exact duplicate of the Nerf on the small scale. You have to mold the tail and fins seperate from the football and them assymbol it. And its a different type of foam for those parts. Depending on year of nerf, it would be three different types of foam on each rocket.

We're not to the point of being forced into it but we will be close to that by Fulda Gap time which is our primary game of the year. We dont do much other then a couple small games between now and them.
