If you've never flown, I suggest starting with the GWS Slowstick. It's a three channel bird that practically keeps itself airborne. Make the investment in a quality radio and receiver though,as those will move with you to other birds. Once you've mastered it, move on to a four channel Cub model of some type.
Keep in mind, high wing birds are easier to fly than the low wing ones. A simulator also helps keep the skills sharpened when weather doesn't cooperate.
