Just ask him how you tried to stop him. Point out that you were only explaining why you were against gay marriage, not trying to stop him in any way.
Issues like this often end up with either party calling each other stupid, etc. It happens most of the time that any argument on issues with abortion/gay marriage/etc come up.
Ask him if he thinks that marriage is a state issue or a religious issue.
I also think it's important to realize that not all of our Christian values can be forced upon the entire country. Examples: Getting drunk (Not drinking, I drink a lot but have never been drunk), witchcraft, using God's name in vain, etc.
^I'd like to point out that abortion is different, as abortion is murder, and not simple immorality, like drunkenness, etc.
