Thread of the Week: Who'd I miss

This one is slightly egomaniacal. But then again, so am I (well, maybe not slightly).

Over the years I have been accused of playing favorites, keeping people on the roster who did not deserve to be, not recognizing talent and consequently leaving better players off the ‘Canes than the ones who were on it.

So, “Who did I miss?”
Who were the best players in NE in the 2005-2009 time period who did not play on NEH.
Which of them didn’t want to, and which get chalked up to my inability to recognize talent.

(This is coming about because I have a few people right now telling me that I fail to recognize how great they are, and I thought this thread could be fun. If we don’t have posts by Saturday, I’ll delete it.)

I honestly think you did a pretty good job at picking the people you did in the past. I know a ton of really talented players that could definitely compete at a higher level than they are right now, but the players you had were in the game for long enough to to know the demands of the competition, and the demands of going pro. As for 2005-2009 there wasn't much to choose from, and from 2010-? there still isn't much to choose from. Thats just my opinion though.

I'd have to agree with Josh - out of all the people willing to play for the Canes (you) I believe you picked the best group of players. Is there always room to say this one over that one - sure, but I think you're talking about a marginal swing one way or the other - tough to say who was/is better then the players you had rostered during that time.

There is a lot more to playing then playing. Some people don't realize that the baggage they bring along just isn't worth it sometimes.

Keith has (and is?) played with them recently - not sure about between 2005-2009 though

That's correct DP, Keith was on our "B" team (NEX) during that time. Keith is now roster with us for this year.

Right, I was talking about that time period. He played with NEX and Hogan's during that time.

i have a question: is there anyone from 187 crew currently that you would like to cherry pick from dave?

were any of those players on your radar in the past? and if so do you regret not pursuing them?

#1. The thing about 187 is that they are better as a group than they are as individual pieces. It is the definition of “team” and they have it. So “cherry picking” one or two players may just mess up the special sauce and hurt 187 while not greatly helping NEH. Maybe Carlin becomes an average player with another team as opposed to the player he is with 187? I don’t know, but it would certainly temper my reaction should the opportunity ever present itself.

Additionally, 187 players don’t want to be Hurricanes. That has been clear for a long time. They are loyal to Dave and to their team. NEH is a pain in the *** to be a part of and if you don’t want to be a part of it, you will probably burn out or just be miserable. So I would be initially disinclined to pursue adding a 187 player (even one that approached me) today.

#2. I did approach 187 players. There were a few practicing with NEH towards the end of 2009, with the intention of (potentially) bringing one or more on board. But then we left the pros and 187 entered the PSP and it became untenable.

If you remember, a number of current 187 players were at the NEH tryouts at the start of 2010 (Nick, Carlin, BMoney, Zaleski, Greg and Tiensy).

And don’t forget, BJ comes from 187.

I probably could have pulled the trigger on one or two and had them on the team and they would have contributed and made us a stronger team but, again, they weren’t interested, so how much could it have helped us or them?

which word?
Isn't? You should have used "Aren't"
hurricanes? Hurricanes'
Anyways? Anyway

12 words, two of which were names and one was "lol" and you got 3 of the remainder wrong.

Ironically, "demographic" actually does work, depending on how you meant it.

But, to answer, they are older than the standard Hurricane, yes.

I don't know if I'd say we missed him, either. He was practicing with the team and was scheduled to play with NYH (the xball side of the team) with as much a chance as anyone else of breaking into the pro 7man roster (as opposed to the semi-pro roster) when he got his offer from XSV.

I suppose we could have pulled the trigger faster on him, guaranteed his spot in 7man and then likely kept him (I say likely, I really have no idea. He seems to quite enjoy CA), but if we did that for him and not other players... I dont know. Mac, Savoie, Dellas and Poo all bounced on and off the pro 7-man roster that year and, at the time, there was nothing guaranteing that Greg would end up being a better, or longer tenured, player than any of them.
