I'd like some variation on that, with it more random. Totally random selection might be good, but there's the chance some teams will get stacked.

Maybe have the pool split between novice and rookie players, where the entrant would select what he thinks he is. Say, if 40% of the players are novice, then each 5-man team would get two random novice players and three random rookie players.

That would encourage rediscovering teamwork -- it's easy to get used to each other (i.e., gel) when you play on the same team tournament after tournament. It would also encourage bringing newer players along.

Of course, the rookie players would then be playing against more experienced players, but it's not likely that they'll get crushed.

we are playing against the cadets who will be Germans
so i believe we are Russians this year
we were Germans last year and smashed West Point who were Russians
