What market would best to start with?

Im looking to starting a paintball company in conjunction with a machine shop that Im associated with, the guys there are highly skilled engineers and the the shop does military contracting, so quality is topnotch and we have access to fun materials like carbon fiber and titanium. Ive been working on a few designs to try to get produced as a small run shop run paintball company. Which market do you think would pullout the best results?

- barrels
- aftermarkets parts
- woods ball guns/ upgrades
- speedball styled guns
- etc...

Im open to any ideas!

great idea, but the price tag would be astronomical, because its not as easy as just machining a body of carbon fiber... But i will consider that!

a paintball revolver would be sweet. one that works like a revolver would be epic and i'd be down for one. maybe even one that is first strike capable.

not enough of a market there.

I will be building a marker. Prototype progress will be documented on here!

Honestly, if you are looking at bootstrapping a startup go with a barrel first. Then move up to aftermarket parts like an ASA, feedneck or other accessories that most markers use.

Then you can jump right into prototyping markers.

I don't know, I feel like the barrel market is actually pretty flooded/full, and it would only be worth entering if you had something unique or revolutionary to bring to the table. But I agree on feedneck/asa's etc.

My suggestion would be private label marker bodies. Take a popular marker and develop a body you can sell with no internal parts as an upgrade.

I have already made up my mind, I am working toward a design I put on paper about a year ago. It will be on solidworks soon, and sent to the CNC soon.

I agree with L_X, I would love to see some more aftermarket bodies available for more guns. They used to be available, but now it's just not very common.

It's called reverse engineering. Takes more up front investment because you need to have access to the equipment to be able to get the dimensions.

Have you tried asking for CAD files and been shot down?

Well if you don't want to do it with a set of verniers you could always just use a 3D scanner, which should be able to scan the majority of the internal cuts (or at least enough to base measurements off).

Anyway that's beside the point as it seems you plan on doing a whole marker - looking forward to hearing more!

I forgot about the scanner! Crap! We have one at the shop.... Lol

All progress will be documented, ATM we are working the CAD to start with the body. Prototype should be finished before summer.

Just remember that most scanners are +/- 0.004" or worse.

I find that hard to believe. Probe style scanners are as good as the skill in using it, and scanners that use lasers to create point clouds have the problem of laser beam width and the resolution of the camera that captures the beam. The closer the object is to the beam origin or focal point the better.

They do make micron scanners, but the Z depth is really low, but the X & Y can be very large (think CNC router type configuration).

I maybe wrong, I'm just going off what the shop manager said to me.

No matter, a scanner is better than no scanner. Personally I would use the scanner for the exterior and use calipers/micrometer for the internals.
