The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.
My sister got me this book for my birthday and said it was all the rage right now in popular literature. I have never read a murder mystery book like this before, and was wondering if anyone could give me insight on if this was a good book or not.
The thing is like over 500 flippin pages. Books of this type don't really get my rocks off but I'll feel guilty if I don't read it. :-\
Anyone recommend it?

I picked it up at a thrift store a while back. Couldn't get past the first 20 pages.

If its any consolation, the movies are pretty amazing. I'd recommend it just based off that...Depeding on if the book came before the movie or not.

My wife bought it and I'm a sucker for "airplane books." I liked it. I would recommend it even. It read fast and the characters are unique enough to be interesting, but I can see how someone would get bogged down by the beginning due to the foreign setting.

The movie hasn't been cast yet, so I don't think you've seen it.

The Sweedish movie is now out and on DVD. In fact, the 2nd movie is already out too. Neither was out here in the States last May though. The US movie is just now being made.

Subtitles + Internet can do wonders, John. In fact, the all three of the films are on Netflix right now.

Yeah, but they weren't last May when I posted that.
I've seen the first two and have the 3rd sitting here waiting on me. I was thinking about watching it tonight. The first two were solid.

I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on the airplane ride over from Los Angeles to Hanoi when I went to Asia, and subsequently on the rather plentiful bus rides, train rides, and whatnot thereafter.
The beginning is pretty slow, but after the first 40-50 pages it really starts to heat up. It builds to the point where you REALLY can't put it down- in my opinion, the character Lisbeth Salander is quite unique and is a pretty cool character.
I've read the second book as well (The Girl Who Played With Fire) and have yet to read the third because I don't want to buy the hardcover version..
All in all, if you can stick with it through the first 40-50 pages of the book you'll pretty much be hooked.
ohgod, necropost. Sorry.
