I do work on computers and build my own, have to take it slow though and not go crazy. Very easy to get stuff your never use and just waste the money.

I did that my first time around but now I have a decent set up I use all the time and a NAS box that I have use a lot. I built an HTPC that I barely use but you live and learn

same, I really wanted a network server to just hold storage. Held off for a really long time then just threw parts together and bought a few drives on sale. Hard to argue with an expandable quad core 4tb server for $300.
I bought parts for an HTPC running MythTV. Unfortunately tuning in proper cable channels was a problem and never got used as much as I wanted it to either. Now that I have more movies on my NAS, I might throw myth on it and try having it serve out movies, etc. As it is right now, I just play the ripped DVD's with VideoLAN. Works great, but could be tweaked better. We'll see what happens, unfortunately time to do everything I really want to do is becoming hard to come by =\

NAS = Network Attached Storage. Basically it's a machine that's just there for storage space to store misc files for me and my friends (music, movies, game patches, etc).

Yep, except multiple people can access it at once and it has other protection against hard drive failure, etc. But yeah, basically a large external drive.

pretty much, mine has a few added bonus like a bit torrent built in and holds up to 4 or 6 TB, i forget what the recent firmware does. I have 3 in it right now (2+1) and its fine for my needs. I just have Movies, Music, and some docs that I just have there in case. As for my HTPC, I tried to do a NES box but it did not work, so my current case is out of knexs. I think I get a better case and HDD for it and I will prolly use it more.
