3d printed parts

So, we recently got a 3d printer at work (that I can do with as I please, as long as its available when we need to prototype parts)

What I was wondering is, would there be any interest in 3d printed parts for the AKA community?

Things like triggers, eye covers etc would be fairly easy to print once I get models made for them. Once I have the basic engineering info variations on things like triggers is near infinite.

Material choices would be PLA and ABS plastic printed at .1mm resolution and whatever density makes sense for the part. Colors are possible too.

No idea yet on pricing. Material is cheap, time is the killer since it can only print so fast.

Ideas? Opinions? Just toying with the idea since I know things like eye covers are getting hard to find.

Triggers would be great if they were made to incorporate magnets and bearings. 03 eye covers would be a good idea, I tried to get some molded a few years ago but the guy I was having do it flaked.

Right now I'm working on getting the basics of the triggers modeled.

Does anyone know what bearings and magnets have been used in the past for these things? Something from mcmastercarr would be great so I can get dimensions for them.

Yep, those are the second thing we are modeling. Just doing the trigger stuff first since its super easy. Almost done with the important parts of it.

Also, the URL in your sig is either broken or outdated. One of the two.

Definitely triggers. I've been trying to get Elliot to loan me his Magno trigger to either mill a copy or 3d print for a year now.

And as far as magnets go, I'll get with Jay at PB. I know he's ordered them for the A1 triggers and I think they are the same size. I know he isn't getting them from McMaster-Carr.

If you get me CAD data I can print anything within a 6x6x6 inch build volume. Printing off a AKA razor blade trigger right now, well see how it goes.

Well I'd like triggers for all of them to sell them as complete so that the buyer doesn't have to go through the headache that I have in trying to track down the triggers. Probably keep 2 of them for myself. Anno 1 to match the pewter PBX that I have.

would love to see how it comes out.

I could draw up a CAD if I had a trigger to go off of, problem is, they are pretty much like my right arm, Non existent

Perhaps another aka parts hoarder has access to one

Ran into a small, i mean small, issue with the printer. The Z axis is printing slightly high which is resulting in parts being slightly bigger in that dimension than they should be. So, gotta get the Z calibrated.

Found this all out when these came out a touch too thick to fit into the grip frame. Frame opening measures at .25 inches and these clock in at like .26 or something like that.

Definitely going to have to tweak the geometry of what we came up with. But its totally doable.

Let me ask you, whats your background with 3d printing and manufacturing?

I ask because I've ordered a FlashForge that should be here in 2-3 weeks. I have plenty of seat time on 4 axis machining centers and lathes, how much of my knowledge of cad/cam machining would apply to 3d printing?

I've never used one, heck, never seen one in person. Is setting and running the printer similar to setting up tool paths? (im assuming it is, but it don't hurt to ask)

Quick question, what all do you need to make a decent copy? I curently have someone interested in purchasing one of my Vikings and it has a custom bolt pin. Hate to let it go, but if I can get copies made
Most I can do is take pictures and get dimensions of it.

That and it looks like the Dark Works trigger might be going as well. Like to get that copied before it leaves my hands.
