"With the NPPL in talks with ESPN and the possibility of the NPPL being part of the XGames;

1. How does this impact the PSP?
2. What does this mean for paintball in general?"

Money will be spent on televising paintball. It will continue to be ignored by the masses. It will have no effect on the sport.

I hope that it would bring more positive light to our sport, and that we can return to the glory days of paintball, where companies such as AMD, Intel and Bawls were sponsors of pro teams.

Realistically, I agree with sumorai.

I'd have to say that it sounds sexy, but is it really?

I think that if presented properly on x-games it could help draw more people to paintball.

Does it have a huge impact on PSP vs NPPL - I don't think so. Just look at the registrations for NPPL HB and PSP TX - for the sake of discussion I'd call them roughly even right now (Ok - not really, PSP is out front). However, HB is the flag ship event for the NPPL and TX (AKA 1st event) has always been a slow starter for the PSP.

Primary format:
PSP 53 paid (82 signed up)
NPPL 51 listed (I don't know what is paid vs not paid)

Secondary format
PSP 39 paid (53 signed up)
NPPL 25 listed (I don't know what is paid vs not paid)

I guess the question really is - how did ESPN pick the NPPL for the x-games? Bart paying the bill? They feel it was the better format to "Sell"?

I've always felt that x-ball was the better format - allowed for the better team to win the majority of the time. I'd prefer to see x-ball in the x-games - makes sense to me - they both have an "x" in the name

I agree with Dave here about the format. Xball is a better spectator sport IMO. But it could be very confusing to some (especially people new to TOURNAMENT paintball). In Xball, the best team wins (normally), as well as the fact that its much more fast paced and crowd participation is allowed. This will allow new fans to interact and walk away from a paintball event (such as the X-Games) with a new found interest. Whether this kid goes out and buys a dynasty jersey or starts playing at his local field more often, this helps paintball (on the local and national level).

Does this impact the PSP? I'd say not too much, any exposure to paintball by means of the media is positive, regardless of format. I don't know for sure if this exposure will help the dilemma of finding a suitable format for TV, but I believe it will help push for paintball appearing the the summer X-Games. PSP clearly has the dominant format in tournament paintball, and whether or not ESPN looks into them is up to them. To me it seems that while the NPPL does not have the same prestige it used to, there are still extremely experienced paintball players/coaches/business entrepreneurs involved in running the NPPL and there experience will help to promote paintball as a whole, not just a certain format. I know ESPN has some experience with the NPPL, which might explain why they went back. Anyone know off the top of there head's if PSP has ever aired on national TV?

It might have come down to who approached whom first, or the fact that they have dealt with NPPL before. Depending on how it is presented, NPPL could show more or paintball as a whole. There are 7man, 5 man and pump devisions, whereas PSP is only a 5 man game.

1. The same way it did for the NPPL when the PSP was talking to a major production company in 2003. It doesnt.

2. The same thing it meant for the NPPL when the PSP was talking to a major production company in 2003. Nothing.

With the Xgames a level of legitmicy comes. After Tony Hawk blew up skateboarding you see a lot more skate parts pop up in towns.

Granted I dont think youll see a town throwing up an Xball field....however they may be more receptive to a buisness going in or their kid playing regularly.

I don't think it'll ever be enough to overcome the stigma of kids playing with guns.

Fact of the matter is that neither format is right for the XGames. There is no team aspect in the current XGames. HAving a lot of experience outside of paintball with action sports and having a little bit of inside info from the owners meeting I know that the format is not even in question. It will be something along the lines of the 3man that was once on TV as well as a skills portion. This will align the sport with the XGames style of athlete driven competition. It really came down to who had the better contact in the TV industry and the NPPL picked up someone behind the scenes with a ton of ESPN specific connections. Its not a money thing.

Exposure is good.
There's still so many people that think we all run around in the woods.
I'm excited to see what 2011 brings. I guess I'm an optimist...

I miss the NPPL, who says spectators have more fun at xball events? If your sitting in the first 4 rows you cant see anything because ever boob in the house is standing infront of you swinging signs, screaming, cussing and grabbing their short stacks. Really, if you have young kids is that where you would want them? Anyway it would be nice to see paintball on tv again.

You need a generation that grew up on gaming. People born in the 80's really are the beginning of that era. Most people born in the 80's are just starting to have kids.

I'd say about half the people outside of paintball that talk to me about it bring up the old ESPN runs of NPPL and the the SP tourney on ESPN
