Is the 55 a growout? The JD's will be tearing everything apart. Also, mixing South American and African Cichlids is not a good idea because they have completely different water parameter needs. The Africans are used to a high pH (8.0-8.3) and a small amount of salt in the water (But not at a brackish level). The Africans also aren't as aggressive as the SA Cichlids.

its not a grow out theres plenty of room and lots of places for them to go into and hide. they were also in the same tank at the local fish store and were fine together there so i said hell why not. and i dont believe they arnt that agressive they seem more agressive then the JD's although they all (all 4 of them) always share the same cove (kinda wierd they might be gay)

africans electric 72-82 F, pH 7.8-8.5
jack dempseys 78-82 F, pH 6.5-8.0

not to differnt in my eyes they can be the same water conditions

Can be, yes... Optimally, No. Honestly if you're just using dechlorinated tap water it probably doesn't matter because you'll be using the same water regardless.

Assuming the "african electric" is a labidochromis... they're very peaceful. JD's are basically *******s, when they get big they'll probably kill your other fish.
For future reference, what the local fish store does is usually pretty much the best example of what NOT to do.

Also as far as making a stand goes. It's probably 15 minutes of measuring and planning, and an hour of actual construction. I made one for my 55 and I think it looks great, and is probably much much stronger than one you'd buy in a store. It also leaves open the option of extending it when I decided to get a bigger tank.

well... I got rid of my pufferfish that I have had for 2 years. Tank was too small for the both of them. They needed 60+ gallons. Sad day...

Anyways I am starting over, doing a blackout for 4 days to get rid of the algae, and will take it from there!

Struggling to figure out what I want to do with this 55. Ghost catfish are something I would love to have, but I'm getting kind of bored with small fish. I would like something more unique, not something you see everyday... but I'll be limited to our well water. All I can tell you is that it's hard, haven't checked the pH on it yet. Going to see if a nearby dairy lab will analyze the water.

Update: 55 gallon is up and running. The UGF is kind of a joke in its water output, and the HOB powerfilter was busted. The glass top was so limed up I could hardly see through it, even after attacking it with Windex and CLR. I was stupid enough to have one panel at an angle while I cleaned the old gravel out (with what looked like 2 years worth of food still in it), bumped it, and broke it. And one of the lights isn't working, nor is the heater. Best of all, the top center brace has a crack in it. Going to epoxy that ASAP.

So, new lights, new glass canopy, a new heater, and a HOB power filter... and I'll be ready.

Here is the stand Ive been building for my 150 gallon tank. Ive still have to install the cabinet doors and then stain it. I also want to add some trim to make it look like furniture table
