Sure it can. We're talking paintballs here, not bullets. Get this: Paintballs are meant to break on impact and they do! It dispurses the energy quite well. If they didn't NONE of us would ever play, it would hurt too much!

Not much to it huh? wow. Btw, if you're concerned with getting shot in the lens, you're missing a lot of the action. Might as well go shoot flowers (no offense Amy). They don't bite back.

if the filter breaks all those glass shards are going to hit your front element and that WILL damage the lens.
There are many schools of thought about this. I'm a firm believer that the filter is a necessity. Especially at fields like SC Village that have TONS of dust particles floating around. Paintball fields tend to be quite dirty in general. So let's say that your filter actually breaks (which I've seen, but only on a few occassions). Are you going to grab a microfiber and scrape the shards across the element? Nope. You'll take the large pieces (which almost all of the filter will be) out by hand and throw them away. Unscrew the filter ring and give it a good spray with alcohol/water mix and you're back in business.

Now if you don't have a filter. How do you clean your lens? I'm talking normally when you have a lens hit. Usually I see people pull a pretty dirty microfiber, and wipe it on a gob of paint that has sandwiched dirt and dust particles against the lens element. You wipe and scrape it like a fine grit sand paper directly on the element making for more and more damage to the actual lens over the coarse of a season. I would much rather do this to a $35 filter than to a $1200 lens. Maybe it's just me.

I need to invest in microfibers. I've only got ones that I'm scared to use sinced I used to use them for paintball. They've been washed plenty of times but I still have turf stuck in it from those glorious days playing at oca.

Also recommendations for a sensor cleaner? I'm pretty sure I've read sensorklear works well, any reassurance? I've got a spot or two that could pose problems in my photos.

I don't trust microfibers for glass. I keep a few around to clean other things.

My cleaning process usually looks like this, with each successive step coming up only if the last didn't knock it out:
1 - Rocket blower
2 - Lenspen brush
3 - Dry lens tissue/kim wipes
4 - Wet lens tissue/kim wipes (Cleaner)
5 - Wet lens tissue/kim wipes (ROR)
6 - Lenspen cleaning tip

SAMs club. It's like $8 for a bag of 25. I take at least a couple brand new ones with me everyday I'm shooting.

Robbo, i respect your opinion a lot, but i honestly found the "go shoot flowers" statement a little insulting. i tried to elaborate in my post to Luke, but i take it im still being misunderstood. again, its just to watch out for a weird bounce off a bunker or something similar. to clarify further, those were just some "tips" for him since he was starting out. i figured those might help him get some decent results his first time out and prevent his lens from getting hit. ive literally broken all of those rules and do so regularly, like i said to luke, those arent anything to live by, just tips for someone whose shooting pb for the first time. obviously there is a lot more to photography then just doing it, i know the pictures you bring to the table are a lot more involved than you just going out and snapping a bunch of pics. my point is just to go out, do it, and get the vital field experience. the awesome shots come naturally and with time.
as for the filters, just as you said- there are many schools of thought.

I don't know how it was insulting. It wasn't directed to you, but to people who shouldn't be on the sidelines. What's really insulting is putting the thought into a new photographer's head that there will be a way to keep his equipment from getting hit. I'm not going to lie, I'm actually notorious for having shot entire national events with NEVER having my equipment hit. Why? I played the game for 8 years. I see the angles, the bunkers that will carry a bounce to the sidelines, I position myself for the shot, then to not get shot. Let me rephrase my comment to hopefully be "less offensive":

"IF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOOT PAINTBALL, YOU WILL GET SHOT, YOUR GEAR WILL GET SHOT, POSSIBLY DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!"

If you can't live by that, than you have no place on a sideline near me. I don't want to be out there with people who get hit and yell "****" "Ow" "Son of a B"... if you can't take a hit, you don't belong on the sidelines. I don't want you flinching and swinging your 70-200 and hitting me, or hiding behind me when paint is flying. A paintball photographer should be able to roam the sidelines freely without interfering in the game or with the other photographers on the sideline.

Paintball photography is not for the weak. If you're getting into it, keep that in mind and try it... then you can decide if it's for your or not.

Again, please don't take my opinions personally, they are not directed at anyone in particular. Hopefully they will mean something to someone and we'll continue to have a good time out there.

Speaking of... HB, scavenger hunt, bon fire, or any other good ideas? I need to organize it this week. Post away!

How many years ago was that? 4? I will place money they don't go far.
They're a good team, but I find they choke in the playoffs. Their division is too strong.

Apparently Geoff is more common in England, and is more of an English name. Weird, but it's what I heard. Lol
