Looking at a Subaru Outback Basic (M/T) -- 2007 with 125K miles on it, has a clean rep via CarFax, but looks like the previous (only) owner was a DIY'er -- only took it in for balance/alignment and a wheel bearing replacement (97k). CarFax states at 97k suggested maintenance was completed.

Question is this.. coming from a used car dealership (privately owned, not a chain), is 8900 (list) too high? To be honest, I only really expect to get 75K extra out of it, but that's all I plan to need it for. I'm just not sure what to expect, though the dealer has a decent reputation around the internet. I should note, private classifieds (Craigslist) turns up cars that are more expensive with more miles, or in terrible shape overall.

I'll just say, I wouldn't drop nearly 9 grand on a base model 125K mile car even if it's a 2007. That being said I doubt it's going to be that bad.

I need a car for around the 2,000-3,000 range. I need excellent gas mileage, but I like an aggressive look. I'm into surf culture so things like Baja Bugs appeal to me. I need a fair amount of space as I am 6 feet tall. I really need a good looking car with good gas mileage, adequate room, and a fair amount of power.

Good luck?

A $3,000 car = you're going to have to compromise somewhere.

The compromise is its not going to be a fantastic car. The bottom line is that it gets me places but at the same time isn't rusted so much that I have to renew my tetanus shot.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I'd love an old surf culture car like a 65 beetle. It just lacks the common conveniences of more modern cars.

For around the 2-3,000 Range your looking at like Honda Accords, Civics, Camry's all reliable good on gas, but not much for the looks department.

Thanks man. I've actually looked into buying one of my relative's '97 Honda Civic. Nothing modified on the inside (probably for the best), but the outside has a sick body kit on it, plus some tint. Only minor repairs are needed, like a buff and repaint of the kit and new tint for the driver side window which has peeled/cracked up top. Plus, I'd only have to fill it up like twice a month with the mpg it gets. To bad he actually needs it.

In my opinion, I doesn't need to be fast. I'm not going to race my car or do anything that needs speed out of my car. It just doesn't need to have the power of a gasoline powered bike. Now, that doesn't mean I'd love to have a classic muscle car sitting in my carport, it just means I don't need speed.

Needs to be manual, not scared of mileage my past 3 cars had 150k+
Top Prio:

Accord V6 (2003+)
Acura TL/RSX/TSX
G35
WRX
350z
Srt4
Mustang GT (1999-2004)
240sx
300zx
GTI
Kompressor hatch
Cobalt SS
525i (2004-2010)
325i
A4/A6

You prefer leather? Interesting.

Do you commonly have to drive through snow or is your daily drive in established areas? I know it depends based on your location in Long Island.

If it's through snow, whatever has AWD or a limited slip differential. If not, whatever you think you'd enjoy more. Obviously things like the Mustang are faster in a straight line but things like the S2000 have better handling.

In that list, I'd probably go S2k, WRX (You can get 04 STis around 11-12 if you can stretch a bit) or the SRT, based on personal likes.

Nice s2k's are over his budget, at least in my area.

You can find an LT-1 Vette in that price range as well. The vette, SRT-4 and the mustang are probably going to be your best "go fast cars"

If you want luxury/fun I'd probably get a 3 series. My e36 is the most fun car I've had. It's also been about 10x more reliable than my audi's ever were.

A4. the V6 is pretty reliable and fun to drive, most have leather, manuals aren't hard to come by, and they get decent MPG

Good point and I agree. Forgot about that when typing the S2000 I guess.

Call me crazy, but of all those listed, I'd probably take a V6 Accord Coupe pending it's a 6th gen.
