The transmission might eat itself. They've already seen it on the 11' Mustang and Fiesta. Other than that, go for it. I saw my first 2012 focus in the wild yesterday. It was red, and sexy. Do want.

Buddy of mine is looking for his first car. Has $10,000 to spend at most and wants something a bit different and more fun than the typical drove of economy cars out there, but also needs safety and reliability.
Off the top of my head I thought Crown Vic and Mini Cooper, but I figured you guys might have better ideas.

2002 Honda Civic LX - Stick Shift
2000 Honda Prelude - Auto
2000 Acura Integra - Stick Shift
Which one, and why? I'm leaning toward the Prelude since I've always loved them, but it's an auto so I'm not too sure.

I would always lean towards a stick shift, as for the cars not much I can say from experience. Although my dad has a 2000 Acura TL, which he loves, and has 230 or 240k miles on it and the drive train is still running strong.

If he likes anything outdoorsy - trucks are awesome! You can get a 2000 or newer truck that has less than 150k on it for nothing right now because the gas prices are so high. If you have 10k to spend on a car, and decided to buy a truck, spend 6 or 7k on the truck and save a couple grand just in case there is something wrong it it (all used cars have something that is going to break soon, unfortunately everything costs a lot to HAVE fixed on trucks.... But the parts aren't bad and they are easy to work on ). If nothing breaks then you have a couple grand laying around that you can customize the truck any way you would like or you can save it for gas money. OR a new paintball gun.
Other options if you are not a fan of trucks, Crown Vic - Great suggestion especially because they are safe, comfortable, and best of all they are looking to close the plant that builds these cars. So... if you hold on to it for a while and get one that is in good condition and take good care of it you may even be able to turn a profit on it a ways down the road because it could turn into a collectors item.
I would also look at Subaru's. I love American cars and have bought nothing but American so far, but Subaru's are awesome cars, fun to drive, and very reliable. I learned how to drive on a 2000 Subaru Outback 5 speed, and so did my sister... AND I taught my friend how to drive standard on that car, all on it's original clutch that lasted 110,000 miles.
Good luck car hunting

B5 S4's are awesome but from what I've seen they're maintenance heavy

Very true - Although if you use the engine and transmission to slow the car down by down shifting, the standards will give the impression of a far better handling car.

Look up 2011 Mustang transmission issues on Google. Not that hard.

Anything Subaru - I'd recommend the Impreza, WRX, or STI. Could also look into the Mitsubishi Lancer/Lancer Evo. Not sure how they sell for new, but you could find them for 18k, and they will even be broken in for ya

An Evo/STI has always been in the back of my mind but I wanted more opinions.

It's going to be a nice day/weekend driver if I do go with a awd car it will see some snow in the winter.

Hey all, for my first car, I have around 7k and would like something with less then 7x,xxx miles. I have an interest in cars and would like something that can get up and go. Not interested in trucks or smart cars/hybrids
what do you all think?

EK civic hatchback. Yes, seriously overplayed, but they will get up and go if you're willing to put a little elbow grease in. (and a bit of money for bolt ons)
