Neck Protector question
Hello. I've been paintballing about a year or 2 now (I go with my dad occasionally), and I'm just wondering about neck protectors. My dad got shot near the adam's apple once, and had difficulty talking for a few minutes. He now makes me wear a neck protector. I hate it, but am scared to take it off for fear of being shot in the trachea and not being able to talk. If a paintball hit you RIGHT there, would you be able to talk still? Thanks. Also, give your opinions on whether a neck protector is necessary please.

Yes, you'll still be able to talk. I wore a protector myself for 15-ish years. Forgot it one day, naturally got shot just to the right of center my first game out. Solid throat shot. Second game, five seconds in, I got hit in exactly the same spot. I was more amused at taking two consecutive shots to the throat than I was in pain. I mean, what are the odds, really?
I wouldn't call a neck protector necessary in the same way I would classify goggles. Are they a good idea? Sure they are. Any protection you can wear is a good idea, just like knee pads, gloves, and groin protection. All those are optional, but when you really need them, not having them is going to hurt some.

Getting shot in the neck sucks, but usually it dose not happen to me. I mean really it shouldn't be exposed much anyways.

I've been shot in the neck plenty of times, but if you get shot point blank and someone is shooting above 300 fps, I'm sure permanent damage is possible. If you can tolerate wearing it, I would do it. Better safe than sorry. And honestly, your wellbeing should be your top priority.

There is always the possibility that the damage done will be severe and permanent if the hit is in the perfect spot and hard enough. The likelihood of it happening is small. Get used to wearing it as any protection is better than none in my opinion.

neck protector isn't necessary, but it's nice to have if you're playing with people would like to bonus ball. the best one i've found is actually the most expensive hockey neck guards, which are very thin, don't have any padding, but are made with kevlar. The only purpose of these is to keep skate blades from cutting through your neck, but i've found it useful for paintball as well. They're very flexible and non-restricting.. plus I use it for both hockey and paintball so it's not like it's a waste of money

I've been shot in the neck a lot. It was then that I decided to get a neck protector. Since I got it, I haven't gotten shot in the neck though. So, I'd say that it does offer protection in case you do get shot in the neck.

certainly not neccessary, but when i started i wore one because i felt more confident and protected with it, so i played better. Now I am confident without it and haven't worn one in years.
Even a bunker to the throat will not cause any significant damage.
