exactly this, i've seen ball pythons and albino corn snakes forsale for 100-150 bucks at regular pet shops, the mark up is insane as apposed to a breeder.

see i used to be big into reptiles from 2000-2003 (my middle school years) and a pastel ball was almost a 1k snake back then!

i remember seeing pies for 10k at shows...

really really want a blood or yellow annie next, i had found a 6ft yellow that needed rehoming for 200 and i wanted it so bad but i have no room at the moment... :/

Quite the challenge - I have an albino monacle that I picked up as a rescue snake (Somebody thought it'd be a great idea to pick up a venomoid cobra and didn't do any research on the proper care). I AM STRONGLY AGAINST THIS PRACTICE (for the record) but my vet got this girl in and was going to put her down but called me seeing as I own a couple gabbys (hot) to ask if I would take her in.

First cobra I've ever had and would not recommend it to anyone without an extreme amount of experience in dealing not only with snakes but with hots and still I wouldn't recommend it. Due to my lack of experience in cobras, I wouldn't have been able to take her if she would've been hot but luckily I was able to save her life and give her a good home.

I agree with the above. Please for those who have not handled hots DO NOT BUY ONE! find a mentor. learn learn learn learn...then learn more before you buy!

I have done bite protocols for local fire company's and it is amazing the amount of people without a clue about hots as pets.

I had a blk pac cobra and king for awhile. I have 15 years with hostile snakes and to this day wonder how I never took a bite from them. They are smart and learn from your every move and sooner or later you will make a mistake and could pay a dear price for that!

You want a cool snake buy a blk pine snake or bull snake they show off just like a cobra but cant kill you!

gl guys!

the ones i really don't understand are people buying spitting cobra's then free handling them without glasses or anything to protect their eyes.

i wouldn't just say cobra's though, anything in the Elapid family can be pretty nasty.

Lol I am not going to be buying a cobra. I probably won't buy a snake in my life, but if I do it might be a ball python. I was just wondering, because I didn't know people kept cobra's as pets.

So can you handle them? I guess that question was already answered, but I assume you can't handle them too much? I thought they'd have to stay in their enclosure and it would just be something to look at... like a fish.

Can you handle them? Well technically yes, but not advised if they're hot.

Where my girl is a venomoid (Surgical procedure used to take out the venom sacs of a venomous snake), as bad as I hate to do it, there is a lot of times that I have to force feed her as she just doesn't eat the way she should (typical of venomoids). So I handle mine much more than a cobra should be handled but it is for the health of the snake so I have to. Due to this, she has also bitten me a few times as the poster below me stated they are very smart snakes and pick up on things quickly and its amazing at how fast she can go from calm to uber- ***** in the blink of an eye. Typically as you stated it they are a lot like fish as the only time you really would want to be interacting with the snake would be for feedings which would be done with large tongs and f/t mice.

Meet Flanders.

Got him yesterday! So far he's been great, he's nice and timid, too. When I picked him up the shop owner said I got a free mouse for the first feeding. So, naturally I was like "**** yea". Then he came out with a full grown feeder mouse, and I gave him the Gary Coleman face. He told me he could eat it, but I thought it was too big. So he gave me a tiny feeder.

Later on I tried to get him to feed but he wasn't interested......he just kept climbing. So, he climbed up onto the clay pot in his cage and started to stick his head through the hole on the top, sniffed around, and BAM! He ate the whole thing suspended....like a boss.

Anyway, do you guys think he can take a feeder mouse?

Rainbows and bloods tend to be nippy. Ball pythons are great, as are rats.
